I like some. I dislike more.
I prefer his more straight forward work.

I'm in the same boat.
I think he was better served keeping it simple.

They have Frank Zappa day in Baltimore. It never turns out the way it's supposed to. I am not sure what my favorite work is. My Dad listened to Joe's Garage and Over-Nite Sensation a lot a lot when I was a kid so I'm definitely more familiar with those two albums.

They played Summercamp one year and we were up front and hanging out with this couple that we had met the year before at Claypool. So this chick had a sign and I can't remember exactly what it said... something like Dweezil let me suck your weezle, or similarly perverted. And this tactic had worked on Claypool the year before, pics and autographs.
Anyway, after the set they were over to the side of the stage and Dweezil comes over and they have her come back. Just her. Her boyfriend stood there completely confused. I always wondered what happened when she went back there. They were a cool couple. He always had a backpack full of ice.

Anything with George Duke is going to be good. From perhaps his best tour ever:

Noooo, she got a picture and whatever with Claypool, the sign for him asked for a hug. I don't know what happened after Zappa Plays Zappa. I'd like to.

When I met Claypool he refused to shake hands. He pounded his towards me and said "howbout one of these?"
I bet he's met some jealously vindictive fans that have tried to crush his bass fingers.

Early Zappa I'm all for.
He then hits a period in the mid 70s and 80s where I just have no interest.

Some people don't like all those little notes of the early 70's. Frank was real good at utilizing the talents of each band member to create the whole. Every tour was different, even if on a lot of tours the set lists didn't change much. The solo and improv sections were flexible though.
If you're into the more straight-ahead stuff, the '78 winter tour was pretty good. Frank didn't play his guitar as much as other tours, but when he did he made it count. It's got Ed on vibes, but for whatever reason his playing was less frantic than Ruthie-Ruthie. More as an accent than a driving force. The Hammersmith Odeon release is pretty representative of what was going on at the time. This tour was known for each show having more than the usual 'monster songs' which featured a lot of improv. 'Pound for a Brown,' the somewhat rare 'The Little House I Used To Live In,' and of course the monster of all monster songs 'King Kong' were played at this show. Nice solo in 'The Torture Never Stops.' There's even an 'Envelopes' with vocals. If you like 'Sheik Yerbouti' and Adrian Belew give this show a listen. Frank, never a fan of England after having been thrown of the stage at a show, busts on the audience more than usual. "You wanna hear an old song or a new song?" No matter the answer, he played what he wanted.
Here's the first disc of the show. The other two discs are also on the Tube of You.
