In New York the magical bullshit arbitrary number is 20. IF your car is 20 years old it does not have to pass emissions. For most states it's 15, and this is for obvious ass reasons.
A fuckign 15 year old V6 is not going to pass Emissions, all that even happens is you pay 600 dolalrs to turn a dash light off, so your car can be plugged into the NYS system to issue your inspection and pass, only to have the light turn onn later.
Brilliant scam really, kudos to the ppl makign money on that. Shops, Car Dealers, the Government, you name it.
I am not sure what it's liek whereever you drove illegal and How many Years ago it was but I did the same thing I having driving illegal down to a science, let me explain why in NY this does not work and why you can't even drive down the road without having insurance.
There was a point ant time where you could buy fake inspection stickers to avoid the scam this was mostly done in places like NY due to BS Emissions Inspections, here is how they closed that loophole. You now must plug your car into a state machine all mechanics have to get an inspection sticker, so when you go to register your vehicle the DMV already has on their computer whether or not you have a legitimate inspection.
Trust me, I almost had the cops called on me the first time I went to Re-Register my car at the DMV which I was already mad about because that's another money scam, the lady refused to give me registration because her computer did not say I had a valid inspection. I wen out to my car, took a pic of my fake sticker, came back, and she refused to accept it.
SO, your forced to comply with the Scam Emission in order to Get a Registration.
The Police now have devices in their car's that automatically register if your Registration/Insurance if it's expired, I was pulled over this way once with Expired Insurance. In the Police state we live in you can not get away with driving without paying for all the mandatory scams.
Gone are the days where if you did not have a liscense or insurance or were driving illegally you could get away with it by driving carefully, If I were to drive that buick illegally I would be pulled over just as quicky as I was the other 10 times in 2 years or less because I was driving illegally.
The price you out of the game, driving is for more well off people and those who can afford it. I could not afford to keep up on maintanence anymore and Emissions and being pulled over by police.

One thing I did to avoid the Emission scam was I would buy a fake Inspection sticker every other year to avoid being scammed out of 500 buks at least to get a dummy light off, only officially doing so through the machien when I needed registration. That way instead of being Ripped off on Emisisons for several hundred dolalrs every year, it's every other year.
The only people I feel worse for are California Drivers, talk about $$$
And Ferd, getting rid of it for 150 dolalrs is to be slapped in the face and accept a massive rip off equivilant to pawnign your grandmothers jewerly just because you needed cash.
I would not be unloading a headache onto someone else, I am helping contribute to someone elses profits made by taking advantage of desparate peopel in desparate scenarios.
Scrapping the car is like pawning jewerly, and the people at the Scrap yard are just as bad as the Cashs for Gold guys. Why should I, the person with the least in this whoel process take the biggest hit just because i'm desparate for money to try to pay for the Truck that woudl allow me to scrap the buick part by part.
For people with lots of money or enough, just scrapping the car for 150 bucks would not bother them because they don't need it and just don;'t want to be bothered with an old car anymore.

Guess what, it's such a scam they had to put a arbitrary year limit on it because these facts are already known.

In other states, mycar alreayd meets the 15 year limit.... WHY? BECAUSE 15 year old cars, V6's and V 8's do NOT pass OBD2 emissions introduced in like fucking 1996....
Thats why you see people eslling cars 1996-2004 ALL the time, but as soon as you get below 96 theyre not being sold.. WHY? Peopel have them and don;t need to pass emissions, thus it's worth it to controbute to scoiety and still drive it.
OBD1 OR 20 years,
I know all about 1996 and older being OBD1, so it;s not they don;t have to pass emissions the state put that year there because OBD1 cars can simply be unplugged and plugged in to pass emissions.. OBD2 cars reuqire to to drive X amount of Miles if it etects the battery was reset.
Iv'e alrady been into this, and that's how I know other states have it OBD1 or cars older than 15 years don't pass emissions. It seems liek oyur challenging me Ferd
