Gang violence and people with mental illness getting an ar-15 have nothing to do with each other.

You keep bringing it up like it's relevant. It's not.

what does that have to do with this situation? Nothing but I thought it was a point worth mentioning. It's American politics. Take advantage of domestic crises to push a preconceived agenda. Yup. Politicians be politicking. It's what they (all) do.

How is the far and away highest cause of gun violence irrelevant in a conversation about gun violence?

Obama made his remarks before he even knew what exactly happened. He is just using a tragedy to push his agenda. Also, ever notice how he only makes these types of comments when mass shooting happen? These types of shootings only account for a half of a percentage of the total gun homicides that occur annually in this country. Over half of the gun homicides are due to gang violence, many of which in occur in his home city of Chicago which has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Odd he never addresses that situation. You also have to consider that sure, Chicago has strict gun laws, but it's not hard for someone to go somewhere else to buy a gun. Guns travel pretty easily.

in those 80% of the total homicides that were committed by gangs, how many of those guns do you think were bought legally? I don't know but my gut is telling me that it's a small fraction.

Poo, to address gang violence and actually come up with a real solution would mean coming up with a real solution to systematic poverty and gentrification that America itself has caused.
Better politiking is having a war on drugs, making police forces bigger and giving them more funds, coming up with all sorts of laws, etc

And it's irrelevant because it's not a criminal walking into a school and killing innocent people. Mostly criminals killing other criminals over crime which is more of an economic issue than a mental health/gun law issue.

It's not irrelevant if we are including those gang related gun homicides in our statistics on the topic of gun violence in this country.

I agree. The cases against guns are these high profile tragedies but if we want to talk guns then we gotta bring all gun related deaths to the foreground. Not just the buzz filled tragic school shootings.

I would be interested to see a statistic on gun deaths that does not include gang violence or suicides.

And how would that relate to school shootings?

That percentage is the fuel to the anti-gun fire.
