Bike stuff in this thread.
I'm thinking of getting a downhill bike for out here but don't want to spend $3k on one. Diamondback and giant seem to have some entry level ish ones, thoughts?

Yeah, I'm in the market for something I can ride around town for a few hundred dollars. Something I can get at Dicks? Suggestions, please? Brands to avoid?

I have a Specialized Hard Rock that's probably 15 years old at this point that gets me from point A to point B w/ no issues. It's a mountain bike but I put road tires on it.

I have specialized rock hopper I thought it was badass when I got it then I moved to WA and everyone has 3K full suspension and I basically have a child's toy.
I still really like my bike. Depends on how hardcore off road your going to be doing

To get me a decent downhill bike for the mountains here looks like I will need to drop about $1800 unless I buy used which I'm leery about due to how hard they are ridden

I'd look for a used one. But I'm not sure I'd get a downhill bike unless you are already pretty handy on a trail bike.
New alloy version of specialized demo 8 is pretty sweet though.

I've ridden a lot when I was younger and even did some real downhill single track in the mountains of Montana. On a hard tail. Was sketch as fuck.

The components are all garbage on those things and the frames weigh metric fuckton. Get an entry level trek/specialized/giant/Raleigh etc used on cl.

You can get a long travel enduro bike that will handle anything you can throw at it and still be able to go uphill. With the advances in the all mountain category, a dh bike is too much for all but the absolute gnarliest shit.

Buy on CL, without question.
For your DH bike too. It will be cheaper to buy used and get the front and rear shock serviced in most cases. A good idea would be to ask the seller to let you bring it to a bike shop to get checked out first.
I built my bike from CL and eBay. I have a really good friend that is a serious bike tech. He ended up rebuilding my wheels a year later. I bought some sweet Chris King's that were laced to garbage. Now those wheels are bomb proof.

How much front and rear travel would you want Dan if you were going to hit keystone or somewhere like that?
