Finally got an email back about the kids bike. Little one is going to be rolling a specialized just like daddy provided they still have it in a few days.

Got 30 miles of gravel in today, 1,400 ft of climbing, previewed part of a 100 mile gravel race at the end of the month.
There are some B Road sections, or minimum maintenance roads, in fact one of them says the county does not maintain it at all, basically jeep roads. There are going to some roadie guys that are going to get their undies in a bunch real fast.

Just took my daughter to try out her new mtn bike. It's a tiny bit big for her but she did pretty well. Hopefully have her out on some singletrack by next year.

Anyone ever been to a velodrome? Is it interesting to watch a race? We have one near by that has races I've been curious about

I was actually looking into that last night. There aren't that many in the US and most are outdoors. You have to have a track bike, some of them rent them. The closest one to me is in PA. They were trying to get one built in DC but it doesn't look like that's happening now. As far as watching it, I kinda like it but it's probably boring if you're not familiar with what it's like to ride a fixie at high speeds.

I saw a trek remedy on cl the other day for 1800. 2yrs old. Had a fox fork on it though and from what I understand they ride nice but need to be rebuilt every year if you ride a lot.

Dude at work is selling this one. Lots of upgraded parts. Kind of blew my wad on vegas halloween for the time being though. Snow will be flying sooner than later.

That's pretty similar to the one I saw but looks like it might be a year or so older.

I wouldn't get that bike if you want to do free riding type stuff anyway. The fork travel looks short and the geometry looks a little dated. No one runs a stem that long anymore.

In high school I worked at a LBS with an older guy who was an Olympic alternate in 84. He brought in his bike to show me. One crank arm is shorter than the other. I tried riding it in the parking lot, and it was bizarre. You need to learn how to ride that kind of bike before you can even get on the track. He used to hit that one in PA all the time.

I've never heard of a track setup with different crank arm lengths or seen one for sale. Not saying people don't do that but I think it would be extremely difficult to get a smooth pedal stroke. My track crankset has 168 mm crank arms where most road cranks are at least 170. 172.5 is a pretty standard length.

I'm not sure if they changed things since the 90's, but the one arm had to be shorter because of the bank. That's what he told me. And that's why I said riding it was difficult.

When you rode the bike did he have old school pedals with toe clips and straps? If you're not running clipless you have a lot less clearance and I could see that being necessary. Also I was wrong, my cranks are 165mm. I can come through a hairpin turn and lay the bike over pretty far without clipping a pedal

It had the old school straps. It was his bike from 84.

Yeah that's probably the reason.
