Black And Blue, Some Girls and Tattoo You are probably my favorite Stones albums. I am with you on Tattoo You and Some Girls, and I think they are the last 2 great stones records and i'll go as far as the only masterworks after the stones parted ways with Miller. However, while i can see how black and blue makes the grouping, being of the same era, i just think it blows. keith has described black and blue as something along the lines of "us auditioning new guitarists" and that's how it strikes me--tryouts, not finished products. don't get me wrong; the stones made worse albums--i would nominate voodoo lounge and satanic majesties for worst of the worst, but those albums were bad by design. I almost dislike black&blue more because it should have been good; the base songs had potential--it was as if it didn't bother them enough that they had just gotten rid of a great producer and a great guitarist, and they didn't seem all that concerned about compensating for the loss of those talents.

I enjoy the looseness of Black And Blue.

Yeah? Well you don't like Hell in a Bucket, so how does it feel for your opinion to be invalid?

Ferd, are you gonna stalk me all over the webtronz about this hell in a bucket song? well, hey, fwiw, i did think the video was clever in that it talks about hell and has "rhythm devils" driving a car around--probably one with bucket seats!

Black and Blue while interesting, is a bit thin in the skin. Kind of like a half baked album put out to satisfy the need for product. A stop gap measure while auditioning guitarists instead of a proper album. My favorite part about it is Keith's totally, open mouthed, stoned out look on the cover. Hand of Fate, Memory Motel, and Fool to Cry were good songs with potential (love the part where Mick sings he's a "certified fool") but could have used a bit more work. I'd rate it as being right in the middle of the Stones output as far as better or worse albums. Probably better than anything post Some Girls, not counting Tattoo You since most of that album was from old, pre-Black&Blue sessions. That '75 tour was kind of tired as well. Definitely a band that has gotten by on their reputation and past glories since their heyday - just like tGD.

Black and Blue is pretty damn loose for the Stones. I'll put it on every now and then, which is more than I can say for just about all of their albums of the past 35 years.
