Outside of Louis Armstrong, Monk was my first favorite jazz artist. Had everything he did. His little idiosyncrasies were so out there and hilarious... but still had form and the classic jazz sound.. First got into Miles and Coltrane cuz of their collabs with Monk.. Don't think I'd dig free jazz if it were'nt for Monk tbh, and the Dead...
Lounge Lizards are awesome.. John Lurie is the man. where Billy Martin got his start.. Lurie put out an album last year with them guys mostly percussion its awesome

Also got consumed w/Monk and thought no other piano players compare when Sun Ra, McCoy Tyner, Art Tatum, Phineas Newborn, Cecil Taylor, Bill Evans, Muhal Richard Abrams, Abdullah Ibrahim, Ahmad Jamal, Chick Corea and Herbie obvs are all insanely awesome and unique...
Mathew Shipp is a modern player i love

Glad to see someone else got into the dead's jazzy as well. Recently saw these dudes open up for Skerik's Bandalabra. Just some local kids but they laid it down.

In all seriousness, Hiromi is in her own league.
I was front row directly in front of her last time she came to the region with the trio project (years ago). Place was maybe a 1/4 full. What a shame. Has not come anywhere near here since.

She's amazing Yeah I have that Melody of Rhythm if that is what you're talking about. Also the Bela and Edgar Meyer duo album Music For Two is great. Kind of a classical jazz fusion type deal. Good stuff.

A thread for what's become my favorite American music and artform... Hope others will contribute. I'll start.. Freddie Hubbard, trumpet / Joe Henderson, sax / George Benson, guitar / Herbie Hancock, keys / Ron Carter, bass / Jack DeJohnette, drums / Richard "Pablo" Landrum, auxiliary percussion. Glad to see this thread. I am only a fairweather jazz dude Ill listen to some stuff for a week, a month or 2, whatever, ill forget everything i listened to and not hear any jazz for a long while until the mood is right and then bam, I want some horns and weird noodly bass I once was spun and cabbing from downtown blioomington IN to a baser's house in a rural area to crash and camp in the back yard, my buddy was wasted and being obnoxious and the cab driver was this old dude listening to George Benson! I told my buddy to shut the fuck up and almost lost my shit to how good that George Benson made me feel. Me and the old dude talked music a bit he used to see Benson etc. One of the best cab rides I have had, the curvy part of the drive was particularly nice anyway, its still wookout wednesday so get to work...
