4 to 8 homeless a day on just a short walk? Sounds dangerous.
There's some, but we don't have many homeless down here. People have their hand out, but they're just poor.

Homeless people are usually too busy just surviving to be very dangerous. It's the little hood rat junior thugs that are the most dangerous because they have guns and a getaway car.

Side note - When we get to Sunday, it will be a full 9 months since I had a cigarette. Congrats, buddy. Yesterday marked 9 years without even a drag on a cigarette or any other form of tobacco. At the point now where if I did it wouldn't be the end of the world for me. The streak would end, but it's just a streak. Don't want to go back to being a smoker and can't see going there. Still, there's some weird satisfaction in keeping the streak alive.

I was just making an inside joke on the dangerous part. I really don't feel that way. I don't look at the unfamiliar as necessarily being dangerous.

Lordk works downtown Chicago...that's where the most homeless people are, especially during business days, I would assume if they panhandle well enough they'd make more money than you'd think. I got like 2/3 that panhandle just about every day a few blocks from my condo...around the condo is pretty chill though

in the end, i dont really care what the homeless do with the money..hopefully buy food, they are clearly down and out for whatever reason, drug addiction, mental instability, bad choices or environmental factors with no family to help out, ect
some are just stranded trying to get train faire
dont change my life at all and it does provide a moment of happiness for me and them.. perhaps i do it for myself but def not always..
some people i see i feel i really should help that person

We have a homeless woman who has been a regular at work for about 10 years. She keeps her appearance neat enough that you would never know she's homeless until you get close enough to smell her. She's very nice and has some mental problems but isn't that big of a deal for us. I don't encounter a lot of people panhandling but I don't really care anymore if they're just going to buy a tallboy after I give them a few dollars. If I was homeless for an extended period of time, I'd probably be trying to get pretty fucked up most nights too.

yeah i have never been downtown, south loop, west loop, and never felt unsafe. It always makes me laugh when people think Chicago is this super dangerous place. There are neighborhoods you don't go in and it's a major city so offcourse things happen but it is a very safe city

the dangerous people know where they can be dangerous and where not to. the Chicago police are not the most forgiving.. more than happy to beat your ass
the financial district is not one of those places
you got to head father south or west an you should feel unsafe because you are.
i always find it odd when some of them have cell phones, those mostly be the professional panhandlers and not the downtrodden

We have seen homeless people with cell phones and mac books pros. It's mostly people with decent jobs who lost them and lose their home. They are still trying to network and look for work but it gets harder the longer they are on the street. The woman I was talking about started with a car. I would get to work at 6 in the morning and she would be in the car with the engine running to heat the car up. A year or two later the car disappeared.

I got like 2/3 that panhandle just about every day a few blocks from my condo...around the condo is pretty chill though lork finds danger in things he doesn't understand and/or know. When I was in a kid in NYC I remember a news story about a place that taught people how to beg; what to wear, where to go, what to say, etc. They profiled this one guy who went home at the end of his day to a decent apartment where he changed out of his bum clothes into nicer threads. I've heard it said down here that some of the women holding babies while looking for a handout rent the babies from their neighbors knowing it will get them some more sympathy. Most people sell candy as opposed to just asking for a handout, but you'll occasionally see the real bead down looking old person with just their hand or cup out. Every now and then you'll see someone reclined in a wheelchair, covered in blankets, a sign on them saying they've got cancer or some other illness, while their relative accepts handouts or sells chocolate bars. You'll see the occasional mentally ill person who has no family to care for them on the street, but it's nowhere near as many as I saw in the US. Family takes care of each other in the Latino culture.

also, to lordk I've given homeless people money before i'm just a little more hesitant these days. Just gotta be careful agreed on that..100% some of them are straight up predators. like i said, financial district, to many people, to many cops for the super aggressive to operate, for the most part i usually have a wad of singles as we split my wifes tip money for pocket cash so why not

That meeting this morning was NOT about the email. Afterwards, I cried just a little.
