This is 15 minutes from my place. One of the parents is a GOP operative who Fox has had on air dozens of times amplifying this nonsense and people just see it on a loop on Fox and get all worked up about something they don't understand. This is a very wealthy County with tons of rich people recently moving into it, but was not that long ago basically farm/horse Country so there is still a rich mix of educated/uneducated and wealthy/non-wealthy. She was also telling me how they had to close a road through Hillsborough and people were pissed so they were fucking with the construction at night and driving through there honking their horns. Wtf. It sounds like a lot of psychos up there. |

Seems like an awful lot of 70ish year old people upset at what their "kids" are "being taught" in schools. I'd bet 1/3 of that room at least didn't have kids in the school system. |

I'd bet dollars to free range donuts that the overwhelming majority of the people with the 'Education not Indoctrination' signs and sentiments are religious extremists who indoctrinated their own children at a very young age into their own hard core religous belief system. |

My new boss is a gay single man with twin two year olds. He has been aggressive in embracing things which for the most part have been ignored around here. We celebrated Pride month with rainbow lighting on one side of the building, hung a pride flag and had a little event where people could read poems, take pictures with the flag, etc... We also partnered with the library across the street to provide Drag Story Time, which is when all the shit hit the fan. This was an event that you had to pre-register for and it was fully explained when you did register for it. It was held in a classroom space and not accessible to the general public. A bunch of rich white evangelicals signed up and stood in the back of the room trying to shame people, followed them to cars telling them how dangerous this was to the community, etc... These fucks have shown up at multiple board meetings to rant and rave about Jesus, they FOIA'd the contracts with the performers to try and get the personal contact info for them, they're writing editorials, etc... Not one of them has a child under 30 years old, not a single person with a child who showed up had a single complaint, but we have to cater to the worst in our society because not everyone lives their lives exactly like they want people to. It's not really my place to be in the middle of this, but it's getting pretty hard to hold my tongue.

Library was doing a story time thing monthy and one of the scheduled guests was a drag preformer. People melted down. Actually this was early 2020 when the summer schedule was published, so no fight over it really went down because of covid. Assholes... |

I thought the other day how if I had to deal with anti-vaxxers who are saying they don't believe what the government or scientists are saying and don't like to be told by others/authority what they need to do and what they should believe, I'd tell them that I understand exactly how they feel, how I feel the same exact way and don't like to be told what to do or what to believe by anyone or authority either - and so therefore, from this point on, please never again tell me what I should do and what I need to believe.
For those particular people I'd be willing to make a trade off. I want attempt to back up what is being said by the scientists if they don't attempt to tell me what I need to do/believe. Of course they would think it's an unfair comparison, cuz (their) god/the bible are somehow absolute, unrefutable truth, regardless of lack of objective evidence, while science, with it's methodic testing, evidence and facts, is all made up with the intent to control our every thought and action.

It's the same when they complain about homosexuals and pda. They don't want to see gays kiss or even hold hands in public. I don't want that pushed in my face, they should keep it confined to the privacy of their own home. Of course they have no problem with heterosexual displays of pda. But then when the people that so easily offend them take the necessary steps to keep an event like that separate, semi-private, nothing that anyone could just stumble across, etc, they go out of their way to include themselves. I'm sure there's a lot of sincere outrage on their part, but wouldn't be surprised at all if some of that outrage was less sincere and crashing these events to protest is to somehow get off on seeing people in drag because it's something they can't even imagine acting out on in any open way or even bringing up to their own concsciousness. Lot of repression in these people. |
