A thread on Dune...because why not...Its a great book and deserves one. It has some great insights about Life.
Interesting interview about the new one....
He was such an intelligent man....started the book from researching sand dunes for an article, but got so much info that he developed the book

Wasnt very impressed about takeaways from the story...kinda lame, except for the director's and Rebecca's

Loved the 1st film so I'm a little nervous about this remake.
I'm worried that with today's political climate that they are going to dumb it down. The original story is very class conscious and highly political. They already removed the term jihad and replaced it with crusade. There is just a lot of stuff in the books that would be frowned upon in today's climate. (Just look at the reaction to Mulan, and that's not nearly as offensive) The good thing is that they are going to make more than one movie so they have the possibility to expand the story to include some of the more political aspects to the movie. The cast of the original movie was amazing, it's going to be hard to top Patrick Stewart and Sting.
The worms look really cool...

The director is long time fan of Dune...that may help matters...better than them just picking one for other reasons maybe..

For fans of the original movie, at some point they came out with an extended edition of it that is great. The additions add more context and a more detailed explanation of people's relationships which makes the movie way easier to follow. It is superior to the original imo even though it's a bit longer

Def not a priority...would be nice if they would find a way to do theater going right... Its a wonder any would still be in business anyway...Maybe drive-ins will make more of a comeback

New was ok. I think I like the old better but I'm going to have to rewatch the old version to be sure. I remember really enjoying the old one. New felt like it lacked the depth and the thing they kept doing with the big music was a little annoying. I will watch part 2 and would guess that anyone who has never seen the old movie would enjoy it.

Haven't seen the old one since it was in the theatres. Watched a few scenes last night on Youtube. Some of the music was a bit cheesy/dated (Agent Cooper riding the worm with Big Ed Hurley). Never read the books. Been reading stories about the new movie where commenters are describing the reading process as a "slog." Obviously, I couldn't say. From what I've read the new version is more faithful to the novel than the old one, but it was suggested that's because the original movie was squeezed into two hours - though that extended version mentioned upthread sounds worth checking out.
The new version is one of the few releases I'd like to see on the big screen. Think it's playing now, but I don't really have time. The Bond movie was gone after one week.

Well, the book will beat any movie....Not to sound cliche, but it is the best. The mood/ tone of the book really gets you...so so so worth it.

i watched it this weekend. thought it was pretty good actually. the score and cinematography stood out to me, as i'm sure they will for most people. visually entertaining for 2 hours stoned. storyline was decent, but detailed enough that you could follow along if you haven't read the books. pretty sure this is the start of a movie franchise given the way it ended, and the opening credits title it "dune: part one".

I read the book when I was pretty young, probably didn’t understand a lot of the political stuff between the houses, but one thing the always stuck with me was the Gom Jabbar test.
Fear is the mind killer.
I think of that often, especially when trying to understand others.
