reason #1239821030 why soccer will never gain super popularity in the US. here i was in vegas thinking this copa america cup is some big tournament with the national teams before the world cup in 2 years, some stars playing in it that i even recognize. oh no, there's also a euro cup going on right now, at the same time, also with national teams. dafuuuq? why 2 tournaments at the same time with national teams? which one is better to win? does either matter for the WC? no one knows these things, not even the soccer-stans. make it make sense...

I believe they're the same year due to covid.
Euro cup is best of Europe, and Copa is best of North and South America. Both have their own style of play so it's cool when they all get together for world cup and Olympics. IMO.

i'm like 99% sure portugal was playing in the copa cup, unless it was a game i was watching that was actually the euro cup and the broadcast had the wrong graphic on it...
do either of these tournys have any weight for the world cup? or are they just in between tournys that no one really cares about?

I believe they're the same year due to covid. Euro cup is best of Europe, and Copa is best of North and South America. Both have their own style of play so it's cool when they all get together for world cup and Olympics. IMO. This is mostly correct. They are both always every 4 years - 2 years before/after the world cup. Copa is typically just South America, this year they decided to include some CONCACAF (North & Central America + Caribbean). Essentially both are seen as a tournament to see who is the best Country on the respective continent and also used as tune-up for the World Cup. In men's the Olympics is a U-23 tournament, and the professional teams are not required to release their player. Its a good showcase for future talent, but not nearly as important as the World Cup (or event these two tournament) on the international stage. |

I don't think that either has any weight on the world cup (as it has its own independent qualifying process), although the winner may receive an automictic bid for their conference. other than it is the closest these countries will get to a big tournament outside of the world cup, so its a good measuring stick. I dont think many in the US care about this, but in europe its a really big deal. |
