I think it would be fair to say OJ was just as famous (and well thought of) as The Rock is now (despite his recent MAGA flirtations) when he murdered two people.

Whenever I hear the name OJ Simpson my mind goes to this Howard Stern bit where they came up with some OJ based song based on the melody to "Ol' Man River" from 'Showboat.' I don't remember any of the words but the chorus where Stern in a low voice would sing "Ohhh Jay Simp-son."

Truly great bit. Comedian Carl Tart is playing OJ and asked both co-hosts to not mention the Nicole Brown-Simpson murder. "You take care"

Joe Frank (a national radio treasure) is usually dark and absurd but on this broadcast he was just absurd and satirical. David Cross plays O.J.'s friend/manservant in the short episode linked below and Bob Odenkirk is in another from The OJ Chronicles (Joe, sitting in the back seat of a white Ford Bronco, holding a Glock 9 to his head, recreates O.J. Simpson’s slow speed chase in Los Angeles. He interviews O.J.’s valet and Keith Richards for their views on the double murder.). The Beastie Boys also sampled from this on To The 5 Boroughs. If you ever heard anything about OJ in a Bat Girl costume it's from this. soundcloud.com/thejoefrank/ojs-valet-from-the-oj-chronicleswww.joefrank.com/shop/o-j-chronicles-the/

Really? You had to be roe because that Dude was born in 1898 and died in 1976.
I had to look it because I thought he died in 1950's or something.
He was a badass. Ahead of his time.

I think Paul Reubens did it, too. That might be who he meant.

Hmmm now I’m confused because you’re right he died in ‘76. I saw a guy do it in about ‘88. I would have sworn it was him, but I’ll need to check with my dad, he was on the board of the theater that had the show. It was an old black dude with a big baritone voice, singing that song. He was the narrator for this show and at the end sang that. ……who the fuck was that?

It's possible right? You just had to be a little kid.
I remember Vietnam War stuff on the news and Nixon winning the 72 election.

We moved around a lot when I was a kid, so it helps locate/time stamp events based on where I was. This was a town I lived in during part of middle school and high school.
….the plot thickens.

The rock is much more famous than oj ever was imo. The rock was at the top of the mountain in the WWE and then became a blockbuster actor. I personally enjoy the Rock and some of his movies

It's probably hard for me to judge considering I wasn't alive in that time, but it's my understanding that the NFL didn't have the popularity, at that time, that it has now, meanwhile it could be argued that the WWE was at the height of its popularity when the rock became a movie star. But again it's opinion based I could be VERY wrong

I guess it's all relative. IMO WWF was at it's peak with Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, etc. The Rock came on after that.
And the NFL has ALWAYS been huge as far I can remember. And OJ was one of the top ten most famous players of all time.
Regardless OJ was everywhere for a long time, much like The Rock is now.
The most famous person ever to be accused of murder.... so far.

The OJ documentary Made in America from 7 or 8 years ago is a really well done look into his life and gives a pretty good indication of just how beloved the man was at one time. Worth a watch.

WWE famous isn’t in the same universe as NFL famous. Rock was a bigger movie star, but OJ was famous in college too. He was the first to break 2,000 yards, he won the Heisman.. There weren’t a ton of black guys being corporate spokespeople back then either. He was your mom knows his name famous.

The best comparison I could think of is honestly Tom Brady.
He's done a little bit of movie acting and commercial work now. Michael Strahan has had sort of similar career path too, less college success though.
