I have to say original Mother's line-up. Probably Absolutely Free.

I love a lot of it, but none more than the Roxy album. The lineup is fire and they kill it all the way through.

Musically I would agree the lineup in the 70's is the best. I've always dug the 60's stuff though. Freak Out was so far ahead of its time.

my favorite stuff is the jazz fusion large band stuff--essentially: Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka, Grand Wazoo.

I prefer his more reserved work so Zoot Allures is probably my favorite album. my favorite song is Don't Eat Yellow Snow.

I like the jazzier stuff, be it the Grand Wazoo (album and band), the Petite Wazoo, the '73 and '74 bands, anything with Ponty or George Duke, Ruthie Ruithie, the original MOI, Uncle Meat, Freak Out, along with not so obvious stuff like Rueben & The Jets (Doo-Wop), the Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra,The Yellow Shark and a whole bunch more.
Yes to the previous mentioned solos from Joe's Garage and the whole concept of xenochrony. No to pretty much all of his 80's output (especially the '84 band, the '88 band excepted) when his sound got cold and digital. No to the Synclavier stuff; interesting as the compositions are the coldness of it all just doesn't do it for me. The 'Frat Zappa' kind of material doesn't really do it for me either, though there are exceptions. Saw him in '84 at the pier both nights in NYC and '88 during the 3 night Beacon run and the 2 night run at the Orpheum in Boston. Don't listen to the '84 band, like to occasionally play some '88 band.
Frank is the only person who's grave I made a pilgrimage to. It was as meaningful as standing on any other unmarked patch of grass I've stood on. Completely underwhelming. If you haven't figured it out, 'Big Swifty' is my favorite Zappa song, with the Uncle Meat version of 'Dog Breath, In The Year of The Plague' coming in a close second. That song has it all. Smooth lead singing, Pachuco lyrical references, speed up singing, an opera singer, and all breaking down into an avant garde orchestral piece.
