Focusing primarily on the drummers instead of Jerry's health, Phil's interest or lack thereof, the length of Bobby's shorts, who's on keys, etc., what do you think was the best drumming situation for the band?

I like Mickey but more as a percussionist than core drummer. Put another way: when he supplements, he's awesome; when he complements, not as much. Still, I like them best in the late 60's, but then, I liked everybody better in the late 60's. I also thought that while they could be terribly sleepy some nights in the 80's and 90's, they were creating more original sound than the rest of the band at the end and not resting in their comfort zone as frequently.

It's interesting how the dynamic of two drummers was so different the first time compared to post-retirement. First time around it was crackling with energy and really added to the music. Second time it seemed to just lumber a good part of the time and drained possibility from some of the songs, as if they wee too much in synch and intentionally kept the playing simple.

It is true Mickeys strengths are in percussives and not the kit but he sounds great playing with another kit drummer, like when David Garibaldi was kit drummer for Planet Drum, superb!
Billy the drummer is a naturally gifted drummer and his timing and memory has improved greatly, especially in say the past ten years. I am voting Rhythm Devils

Mickey is my favorite, hahaha
I just like that he goes weird, and his solo stuff is what made me like him so much. Used to have a ot of it during the early DL thread stuff. I dont own any music anymore.
He might suck, idk

In the early days they could get things rocking when on the same page. In the latter days Mickey seemed to only be there to bang on the beast for 10 minutes during D/S. Mickey turned into a less talented Sunny Ortiz.

Mickey turned into a less talented Sunny Ortiz. I think WSP and GD make for a pretty interesting comparison as to the drumming combos (though I guess any multiple drummer band naturally compares to the others since there are relatively few of them--more in the jamband scene, but still . . .).
The thing to me is that Billy could anchor the Dead all by himself (though I voted for the 68-71 pairing, so I do prefer the tandem approach), and that, I feel, always left Mickey a little unsure of what he needed to be adding. On the other hand, while I guess Todd could anchor Panic by himself, seems like it would be awfully boring. I always wondered if Todd and Sunny had more of an actual understanding toward their union than Billy and Mickey did. As we've been discussing here for a couple of days now, GD drumming is loose! Panic is much tighter, and what I wonder is whether its intentional on Todd's part to be the metronome he is and avoid fills because Sunny is there to complete those empty spaces.
However, and I know this will get some whiskey bottles flying my way if overheard at a Panic show, I definitely preferred what I heard this summer with Duane in that spot. He was more active than Todd, but he managed to still leave plenty of space for Sunny (while at the same time Assuaging Dave's compulsion to think he must fit his big ass into any empty space), so I actually thought Panic sounded much better with Duane back there.

I've always liked King Crimson with two drummers and the whole 'double trio' thing.

Yeah Duane really lifted the bands jamming. I was on board with him. Sorry Todd. But the comment saying that Sunny has no talent is much more offensive and whisky bottle throwing worthy. If you wana talk about an extra percussionist who sucks look at UM lol does that guy do anything. Sunny freaking rocks. Saying he has no talent is silly. If you said that about todd I would say nothing ha.
