I know one of the reasons he got the call was for vocal abilities, but they could've had T Lavitz. Yet another bad decision on the part of tGD. T Lavitz was included in the auditions and lost the gig to Vince

It couldn't have been solely based on keyboard skills since T Lavitz walks circles around Vince. The downside of playing in an instrumental band and never having to sing - you lose out on a gig like playing for the Dead. An interesting "what if" scenario.

T Lavitz was a very gifted pianist and organist that specialized in jazz. I loved his playing with Jazz is Dead and he had funkiness but the Grateful Dead of the 90s would have been extremely boring with T Lavitz. Imagine if Pete Sears won the gig. They wouldn't have needed Bruce to ride shotgun. Alternate Universe Grateful Dead

A Southern fried, country influenced version of Mahavishnu. Steve Morse is amazing. I always thought his playing in Kansas and even Deep Purple was not fully realizing his talents and abilities.

I never heard him play with Kansas but he made Deep Purple sound really good. I love his MusicMan signature guitar. All MusicMan instruments are top notch

I spent a lot of quality time with Vince Welnick when he was sitting in with AZ GD tribute bands Xtra Ticket and The Noodles. Besides being a great player he was a nice and humble person. I asked him about his auditions and Jerry and he told great stories from his heart. I miss that dude

Does anybody count Vince as a member of the band? Vince Welnick was an official member of the Grateful Dead! Yeah he was technically. I'm just saying he surely helped drive the thing into a cliff.

Vince sucked but he didn't drive anything into a cliff, that was Jerry and his heron.

Vince sucked but he didn't drive anything into a cliff, that was Jerry and his heron. Fair enough. They didn't have much of a chance post-Brent.
