Pop-punk is sub-genre of rock.
Different watered down entity than its predecessor.

You are correct technically speaking but that's not how I see it.
Deathcore falls under the metal umbrella but I'm not lumping We Butter the Bread with Butter in with Sabbath.

Pop Punk is to Punk what Pop Death Metal is to Death Metal.
It's not punk, it's just a marketing term used by record labels.
Doesn't mean it's not catchy or bad or bad because it's catchy. It's just not punk.
Green Day, Blink 182, Good Charlotte...... they just need to come up with a label for young teen angst music. It's its own genre.

Nobody that grew up on Punk would ever claim Green Day. Period. +100 Green Day is watered down "punk" for the millennials. It's just a contemporary style of pop. Nothing wrong with pop. I like my fair share of pop, but I don't confuse it with punk. Green Day tries to get the sound in it's own way, but comes nowhere near capturing the aesthetic of punk. It has the facade down, but there's no there there.

I have a very difficult time describing my music. Because I run into people in the hardware store and they go, 'Oh, you're a musician. So what kind of music do you play?' And I go, 'Uh, I've been doin' this for many years - I don't know what to call it.'
