I was thinking about this a while ago figuring it wouldn't be a bad idea to mirror Nancy Pelosi and her husband's portfolio/trades, but typical me, I lazy Caucasian'd it and never followed through. Politicians, judges, the whole political class and everything they touch are already so corrupt with or without regulations on their stock ownership activities, but I agree. Even though they'd still probably get around it by using a proxy, make it part of the job if you want to be an elected official or appointed public official that one has to divest of all of their stocks before taking office. A benefit might be that it discourages the really rich from governing, leaving it to more average people who have no problems selling off their stocks before they serve or people who don't own any stock at all. While they're at it, get big money from donors and lobbyists out as well. Not that any of this would ever happen.
But as long as it's legal for powerful politicians I don't have a problem with the idea of the little people mirroring their trades. They're going to gain on their inside information so in that case and given a corrupt system it seems fair for others to gain by second-hand inside information.
