So is their new gimmick all improv first sets? Listened to about 20 minutes of their show from the 15th just now. Maybe this is a crash course to build better telepathic chemistry between them? But then again isn’t this something that could be done in rehearsal time? 56 minutes of consistent aimless noodle’n with various builds and collapses is kind boring. It’s what happens at NOLA when you see some random band thrown together of great talent but no past experience. We’re here to see we’ll thought out compositions with some power and gusto masterly interwoven with the noodle builds then back into more compositions. I've seen a Wayne Shorter band set up do pretty much the same thing and it was incredible. Completely, 100% improvised music is awesome, you just have to be really good to pull it off, also band chemistry helps. Not sure if spaff00rd has what it takes, but when I saw them they played songs free(er) jazz guys have serious heads for music and improvisational theory. Just not the same class of players. You'll see jazz folks drop in for a jamband show check occasionally, but not the other way around except in certain instances with the obvious usual suspects |
