An early recording with one, 1972, no amp straight into the board. (Solo breaks around 1:20 and 2:40)

Can a big muff make a band specifically, when talking about glorified cover bands like Wolf Mother and the Silversun Pickups?

I immediately thought of this song, but I cannot confirm or deny that they use the big muff. I have no idea what I'm talking about as usual, but it sounds like the fuzz.

That might take some time, but I can try. First thing that comes to mind is Elephant Wrecking Ball, and of course Skerik.

Oh yea Skerik does do a lot of intersting stuff with fx.. Miles had a wah wah and tthen some in BB, OTC, Agharta, and Live Evil..
here's a good one
Been seeing a lot of effects added in jazz lately, be it pedals or laptop samples and its a mixed bag. A lot of it is a shortcut. Also seen some absolute masters get a cornucopia of sounds from their instrument without an electrical aid..

Off memory Oscar Noriega a multi instrumentalist with Tim Berne's Snakeoil was doing things with an alto clarinet that made me go cross eyed

speaking of samples..
In 1968, the same year that Anthony Braxton made his first solo LP "For Alto", Joe McPhee began a series of home recordings, assisted by his friend and future producer Craig Johnson. McPhee had initially worked as a trumpeter, and he'd only picked up tenor saxophone earlier in the year. Along with his very first documentation on tenor, these tracks included solo recorder and a starling "sound on sound" recording, an early commercial overdubbing technique. In years to follow, McPhee would sometimes use the multitrack recorder in performance, referring to it as his Survival Unit. McPhee continued these highly experimental recordings in 1970 and 1973, using instruments not usually associated with him, including deftly manipulated microphone feedback, nagoya, harp, and Space Organ (a Wurlitzer), which he combined with tenor saxophone and the tour-de-force "Cosmic Love".

If I actually decided to buy an amp, what would you recommend, bear? It would just be for me to fart around on, but I'm still interested in quality tone.
Used... $200-$300 range? Maybe even up to $500 or $600 if I got crazy.

I don't currently own an amp, but this thread makes me want to invest in one and get the Strat out of the closet. I was about to recommend one anyways so thanks for the additional info. In my opinion the Orange Micro Terror is one of the best around. It's very small but loud as shit and can be had for about a $100 used, however it is just the amp head so you will need a speaker cabto play through. The amp is awesome though, you can plug it into any size guitar cab, it's got aux in to jam along with some tunes and a headphone jack for silent practice. I had one, sold it and then bought another one again because they're great. I even have a spare cabinet I can send you, and a speaker too if you want, just sitting in the practice space unused. If you want to get your own I recommend at least a 10" speaker, the 8s can be a little weak.

If you want a good higher end amp the Mesa Boogie Subway Rockets and .22 Caliber amps are going for good prices these days and could be had for $500. For a great sounding American made tube amp that's a deal.

Right on. I've already been peeping craigslist. I also saw a few Orange amps on reverb. There was a B52 AT 100 with a cabinet on cl, but that is probably way more than I really need. The neighbors would hate me. It was a good price, I think, but on the high end of my range.
