Somewhere in the Jambase archives is me talking about almost killing myself in a car crash because I was totally in the groove of a Playin In The Band and out of nowhere Donna swooped in and trashed the groove with the ferocity of a rabid seagull.
Holy fucking buzz kill woman, what did you just do??!?

Donna, sure, di-vi-sive. Anybody into the Jerry/Merl stuff with Sarah Fulcher? She supposedly did backup vocals on Wake of the Flood, so imagine her and Donna singing together. The few shows I've heard with her are pretty good. She had pipes and definitely adds something to the band. Worth a listen if you like Jerry/Merl Band. Something familiar, yet different. John Kahn said she was a singer who didn't know any songs. I read an interview where she said she didn't have the greatest experience and had to overcompensate to be heard. Sounds kind of like what Donna went through. Not quite the Donna howl on Playing, and certainly not latter era Jerry band background vocals, but she sings the song in a, uh, unique way.

I once asked Donna if she wanted to poke smot with me. This was at the River Street Jazz Cafe when I ran into her in the bathroom pre-show. She said no thanks, maybe after the show. But then after the show she just drank wine. At some point that night I was hanging out with her band (which still included Jeff Mattson at the time) and mentioned her turning down my pre-show offer, and they all cracked up, and said to each other "HA, can you imagine Donna high during a show?" Apparently she's a bit of a space-case as it is, lol. She did seem pretty "delicate" to me. Donna talking about a Europe '72 show: “I stayed in my room. In Paris, stoned on acid, I found myself lying under the piano, digging the Grateful Dead - and then I realized, ‘Oh, no. I sing with this band! How am I possibly going to be able to get it together to do that?” - Donna Cued up to when Donna starts talking about Europe and the above:
