I took a few days off and was feeling good about it but...then I was like fuck this shit. Going to UM 2 night stand kinda derailed me. I often feel like trying not to drink just isn't even worth it and that the best I can do or hope for is to keep chill enough to not be hungover.

Sometimes I think it would be easier to skip drinking if I was happier about everything else but i know from experience that it's much easier to be happy when I'm sober. It's all just too damn hard sometimes.

Hesitate to say this out loud but, sometimes the attempt at resistance seems to make it worse...yikes...so the keep it even, no hangovers, wins out as most functional approach. I am very aware of the red flags that raises. These things ebb and flow too, so, watching for a time where it might be easier to establish new boundaries. Wanting to really lean into fitness and professional development as a sort of incentive to cool down all things party. At least I have a plan, lol. I think that plans been floating around a few years though...

Multi-day bender, dry out for a couple weeks.
Multi-day bender, dry out for a couple weeks. Reprise.
Pattern I've been on since I dried for a couple months after my stroke.
I find "staying sober" to be stressful.

Week 1 in the bag. Going to try to mostly hold out until late Feb when I am planning to go to Maine. I figure if I don't drink for 6 weeks that will save enough money for my lift tickets.

Admirable. If I couldn't drink in January, Legs would be heavy with #7...
Not much else to do in the winter here

I'm in for another shot. 3rd attempt I did 2 weeks and 3 weeks. We will see if I can go the distance.
Made it a full football weekend. But the dreams have started. I get really crazy dreams.

I'm taking up the slack (as I type) for anyone doing this whole dry January thing. I come from an Irish family with some genetic alcohol issues, but thank goddess my being adopted means I don't seem to share those genes or problems - going without has never once been a problem for me and I haven't been a heavy drinker since my bar days back in my 20's.
I had a friend who was a heavy drinker who waited until Feb. for his dry month. The way he explained it was that it was (back in the 90's) right after the Super Bowl, Feb. was a dead month for his preferred pro-sports (gambling), and perhaps most importantly, even during leap year, Feb. is the shortest month of the year. Even during the other 11 months, dude would get up every morning and go for a run so I always said more power to him.

Feb is a much better choice for all the reasons you said. Who wants to quit after partying on NYE after a 2 week holiday binge.
My last drink was more like 2am 1/1.

I had beers on new years day, but nothing since out of necessity. This cold is finally breaking, but I might go ahead and see how long I can ride it.

I'm stoked for it, but prolly not til February, hahaha.

I’m in again. No issues. I didn’t drink from before Christmas to NYE because I had a lot going on. Hit it HARD for NYE, and am happy to take a break.
This year is different. I am also trying to quit smoking. It’s been almost 7 years, and I have to get off these fucking things.
I have been doing the Zyn’s and they work fine for the nicotine, but breaking the habit of going outside to smoke has been tougher than I thought.
If this doesn’t work, it’s back to Chantix, which is how I quit for 9 years. I don’t want to go through it again, but if that’s what it takes, I will.

Just get pissed off at smoking and instead of saying your quitting. Start saying you don't smoke. You don't need the meds. It's not that hard. Also. Chain smoke fat joints for a while. That helps.
