Exactly the same thing they did when Russia put missiles in Cuba and supported Nicaragua. Freak the fuck out.

I'm no Putin fan, but I think war in general is bad. It equals a lot of dead, injured, and displaced people while enriching the military-industrial complex. All part of a geo-political chess game by all the big players. And I'm pretty sure, as Waters noted, NATO has reneged on certain promises made to Russia. Even though small sovereign countries should have the right to affiliate and align with whoever they want, it's understandable when Russia/China/US takes it as an act of aggression or a broken promise and acts as they see fit to protect their interests.

It's not as if the US isn't doing their part to create global instability. History of manipulating govts. in Latin America is pretty much the same as what Putin (and previously USSR) is doing in his neighborhood. It's just that the US is more competent when it comes to Imperialism. History shows the US doesn't like other super powers attempting to exert influence anywhere near the US. They don't even want Russia or China to exert influence in their own part of the world.

The US has this thing of thinking that when others do certain things it's bad, but when the US does them it's the rest of the world that's over-reacting. Current case in point with China, saying they're over reacting over Taiwan. Or go back 20 years and look at Iraq, which is on the other side of the globe. Seems kind of hypocritical for the US to get upset over Russia invading a neighbor and China not even invading (what was China's last major military offensive?), but saber rattling. None of which is to say that it morally justifies what Putin is doing; just that it makes the US equally guilty when it comes to imperialistic aggression. Pot, kettle, black.

Russia, China, the US..... bunch of assholes (the govts., not the people). It's always the pawns on the board (like Ukraine) who get fucked.

First thing I learned on the first day of my International Relations 101 class is that all nation states act in their own best interest.

Putin/USSR has always had unfriendly nukes closer to their border than the US does. Geological isolation caused by the Atlantic/Pacific oceans as a strategic advantage vs. being surrounded by land and many non-friendly countries (unlike Canada/Mexico to the US), but regardless; closer nukes nonetheless. And these unfriendly countries have a strong alliance with superior technology.

Again, look at Cuba and Nicaragua to see that the US acts the same way when they feel threatened - naval blockade of Cuba, illegally funded Contra war in Nicaragua which resulted in human rights violations/war crimes. And don't forget about all of the other 'friendly' dictators the US has supported and democratically elected governments the US toppled in the Western Hemisphere in recent history.

It's hard for me to find fault when a non-Russian, non-American points out the similarities, but I'm not in favor of Waters giving Putin a pass. People shouldn't use "whatabout'ism" to justify bad actions. I think they should point out and condemn the bad actions of all sides. Losers get hit with war crimes charges. Imperialistic victors never get charged for their war crimes. Sometimes they even get celebrated by holidays.

Regardless of political ideology, no country likes it when a strong foreign power is at their border as it naturally threatens their power.

Not trying to be argumentative. Just talking realpolitik, and from an outside point of view.
