It's difficult to examine where we are as a nation and not be pissed the fuck off by what you see happening, and seemingly more and more often, not happening.

They've campaigned on that shit and failed to deliver again and again. The issues I'm having affect many people to. One party MIGHT do this stuff. Yippee! You could always pay off your loans. Or find a higher paying career. Or just default on your loans and spend that money on something more desirable. Who is going to cover loan forgiveness if it does pass, taxpayers? I think it sucks that people got suckered into shitty loans. I suppose we should also forgive anyone with shitty home or auto loans. I hope all your loans get forgiven, don't get me wrong. But I barely consider it a political topic. We have a border crisis, fentanyl crises. We have an extremely conservative supreme court. A toxic food system. Failing education system. Not to mention we are funding multiple foreign wars responsible for killing literally tens of thousands of innocent. Not to mention the natural disasters that recently hit part of our country very badly. And so on and so on.

I started the conversation as an attempt to separate our personal preferences from what we think would be more competitive for the democratic party. Im sorry I started the conversation.
I'm well over 100k in school debt. It sucks and is embarrassing to some degree, but i also get it and we experienced a generational change that pushed college when college decided to become less valuable than it was percieved as far as being an investment. I definitely expoited my loans and take accountability for that. I also achieved what I set out to initially and developed ambition I didn't realize I had. It somehow changed my life for the better but at a cost I can't always wrap my head around. I will never ever pay it off. I think there are options to live with that. I have intentionally worked in public sector since I graduated, even leaving behind private sector jobs that could be good career options. I use an income driven payment plan. I remain hopeful that I will be able to stop paying my loans in a couple years if TRUMP does not dissolve the PSLF program. I've decided to accept it either way.
Dr venk, I sincerely never meant for this to become personal with you. I know school loans loom heavy. I hope you find an opportunity for relief.

Are you willfully ignoring every fucking word that we write in response to you? I seriously can't understand your responses to the several people who have tried breaking it down for you. You care about ONE thing. None of us are voting against that thing, we are in fact voting for the one party that has tried to make that ONE thing happen. If you only care about that one thing and not all of the other issues on the table that affect hundreds of millions of your fellow citizens, then maybe you are selfish. I also don't get why the Democratic has completely failed you. When you signed those student loans, was there a big disclaimer that said one day Democrats will pay for all of this? Finally, we want the Democrats to appeal to young AND old voters. Some of the things young voters like, old voters dislike AND vice versa. You can't enact ANY policy if you don't win the election. realizing that is part of growing up.

The terms are completely unreasonable and that definitely wasn't what I was told would be the case when I signed up for them. Suicide is easier.

Are you eligible for public service loan forgiveness since you work for the state?

It looks like you do qualify...120 payments, so 10 years and you're good. I would look into that for sure

I didn't realize what repayment plan you're on matters... You can always switch it though if I recall correctly?

I recommend reaching out to your provider and getting all of your options explained. It's sucks but the only way forward is footwork. If you haven't been paying in the past you should be able to settle into a payment plan that's affordable and qualifies, better layer start to pslf program than never? If you have been paying, I know they were accepting payments that didn't fully align with the program some and you may get that option but it requires working with them. I have had to do the same. Good luck.

Just don't pay. Or give them $5 a month forever.

That truly is an option. As long as you don't default it leaves you nearly as financially functional as if you didn't have the debt. At least it doesn't hold the same credit burden as if it was a different type of loan.
I will say this. It is in fact not hopeless. There are resources and avenues to continue with life and a career even if you hold that debt through to retirement.
You are definitely not alone in having to manage the burden.

They changed the terms of the contract to something that is now "completely unreasonable" (which sounds like they were reasonable at the time you signed the contract)? Did the terms themselves change or did your opinion of their reasonableness change? Did a salesman lie to you to get you to sign on the dotted line so they could make a commission? What exactly is completely unreasonable about the terms of your loan? BigTaco's suggestion to default on your loans (or just pay $5/month) and spend that money on something more desirable is a far better option than suicide. It's just a loan and it's not like no one has ever defaulted on their loans/debt before.

If Student Loan Forgiveness is one's big issue, the differences, and the choice, seem painfully obvious, though I suppose if that someone lived in a battleground state they could think it justified to withhold their vote for Harris because they feel the Biden admin. completely let them down and increase Trump's chances of winning in their state and the Electoral College: time.com/7095067/trump-harris-win-student-loan-forgiveness/Student loan forgiveness is in legal limbo as facets of the Biden Administration’s broader student loan forgiveness has been stifled by numerous lawsuits. While the judiciary wields significant power over the future of student loan debt relief, voters will soon have influence at the ballot box: student loan forgiveness could be handled very differently depending on who the country elects as its next President.
- Despite several student loan forgiveness roadblocks, the Biden Administration has been able to deliver more than $175 billion in student loan forgiveness for nearly 5 million Americans...
- Former President Trump has not included information about student loans on his campaign website, and the Trump campaign did not respond to requests for comment. His comments about Biden’s plans and some of his actions during his presidency indicate that student loan forgiveness could be rolled back if he wins a second term.
- Trump has previously spoken in favor of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Biden’s broader relief, which would have forgiven up to $20,000 in debt for some borrowers. “The U.S. Supreme Court handed down massive wins for the American people—halting Joe Biden’s unconstitutional student loan gimmick, restoring fairness to the college admissions process, and applying the strongest safeguards to First Amendment rights in a generation, the Trump campaign said about the Supreme Court’s decision in a July 2023 press release. “One thing is clear: these wins were only made possible through President Trump’s strong nomination of three distinguished and courageous jurists to the Supreme Court.”
- Under the Trump Administration, 99% of applicants were denied Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

It comes down to the loans being available, generationally pushed as a no brainer investment by family and society at the time, sort of cultural climate thing. The loans impacting people poorly often are the result of inexperienced young folks and parents and fam that didn't know any better how insane the interest and payment approach would be. Also, many industries require the same education regardless of the salary potential of each industry. Being a school teacher is a good example. Same education requirement as maybe an insurance company account manager (not all same classes but same degree level) but insurance corporate stuff generates a ton of money, education and most things public sector costs money so not the same salary potential.
I see the culture shift now where folks are opting for little or no higher education and there is better guidance for pursuing higher education in a less risky way especially cause of the fallout of so many from my era where school just didn't lead to better career options.

I have am definitely afraid that the trump will remove the pslf program and maybe even disrupt other payment assistance programs. He and his base have clearly stated that they don't sympathize with those in school debt and have basically demonized higher education and academia as a whole.

I'm going to say the same thing I tell my daughter every time she gets stuck in a loop and convinces herself there is no solution. Stop being so unreasonable!
Cleary the reality you exist in has failed you. So just fuck it. If doing things one way cannot work then do them another. Practice giving zero fucks for a while. Lower your expectations or raise your productivity. Seriously none of it matters that much. You could take off and live in the forest or take out more loans and become a permanent student. Just pick a new pattern and get on with it. I promise it's not that big of deal.
I spent most of my life fucking off. I put all my energy into the only industry that is experiencing the opposite of inflation. I'm currently working at a dive bar for bullshit pay and driving a truck filled with legal weed instead of working for myself (mostly). I'm taking weed to dispensaries that cost less per pound than an ounce cost a few years ago.
You know what I have learned. None of it fucking matters. It's all new and I do not earn a fraction of what I used to and I don't have time or disposable income to travel. And surprise. I really is not that bad.
I hope everything works out. It's ok to quit giving a fuck and let yourself be free from the stress. Seriously.
