Not being into U2 enough to watch the entire show I skipped around mostly to the most replayed parts.
Imaging Phish or Tool doing a run at The Sphere. Or any number of bands who'd make more interesting use of the venue. A 10 strip with every ticket.

I just read a headline that they've already lost like 90 million (not billion, right?) Dollars. For all I know that's just a click bait and they expect it to take some seasons before it starts to profit. Kind of crazy though. I would hope more acts and events fill the schedule.

They've put almost 2 billion into building that thing. It's such a money sink.

It seems like you would need a whole crew just to design and program the visuals. I bet Phish would crush that gig

I could see The Phish doing a 4.0 version of the Baker's Dozen, but they'd probably have to up the # of shows or do a different concept that allows repeats cause it don't look like a venue were you roll through and do just a night or two on your way to Albuquerque. It would be epic.

Wiki says the cost is $2.3 Billion, up from an initial estimate of $1.2 due to the pandemic and the resulting supply chain crisis and inflation. MSG says they're planning on 4-6 residencies per year and I'm guessing they'd do one offs like boxing and other events. Also says they're planning on building one in London and other locations around the world. The $ figures seem so huge, but I'd guess the bean counters at MSG have their shit figured out. It'll be interesting to see who does residencies and how creatively the venue will be used.

No travel (costs). Nice rental house(s) to live in. Probably could leave most of your touring rig (lights, rigging, etc.) in the warehouse or not have to rent. Have someone like Kuroda lead a team of designers, most likely in conjunction with the existing programmers already there.

I'm inclined to believe that it is only a matter of time before Phish announces some sort of 2 or 3 or 4 week residency, at the Vegas Sphere. I think it would be a super cool place to see a show and I would 100% make an effort to attend one of those shows, I know the wife would be down too. But I also wonder about the capabilities of that sphere and the type of people that will be attending those Phish shows. Like some people are going to freak the fuck out and lose their shit in ways we couldn't even dream of lol.

They talked about the Sphere on U Talking U2 2 Me? and said it was really cool but an odd place to see a concert and U2 hadn't really worked out their whole show yet.
Phish could definitely do something interesting there and have the MSG connection that make it seem like it's only a matter of time before they do.
My buddy who did some freelance stuff for MSG also heard they put $2 billion plus into it. They laid off a bunch of staff to make up for the losses. James Dolan is a real asshole.

i mean phish has been rumored to play there since before it was even completed. obvious ties with MSG group, ties with vegas runs already, makes sense.
PT heads say april is on the map, but we'll see.

Idk I guess it could be overwhelming but I just don't see people losing their minds just cause a big tv on acid. I thought you were talking about random Vegas vacationers that will check out any show going on. Just like the Beatles/any cirque show. There will be a guy in a suit with his wife in a dress in their nice seats surrounded by druggies. It will be funny

I've only seen some of the video from a single U2 show there, and as impressive as it was, it was more the potential of the visuals technology that impressed me as opposed to what U2 did with it. Like their presentation could've worked for any band. Or that it wasn't any more special or unique to U2 than what is projected on the outside of the Sphere.
Who else, other than Phish, do you think could really make use of the venue in a way that is as unique as the band/performer?
Maybe I'm just being a bit unfairly critical of U2 and those visuals are exactly in line with what a U2 show should be.

Slipknot, Metallica, Madonna, Radiohead, Rihanna, Jay-Z could do it but I don't see many artists being able to bring a real audience for multiple nights. A tough ask in the times of Ticketmaster and pricey lodging.
