My grandmother, Gramma Bea, was born in 1903. She had my Dad at age 43 in 1946 (scandalous at the time.) When she was in her late teens she got a job as a housekeeper in one of the tourist hotels around Niagara Falls. She worked with older African-American men and women who actually born into slavery some 60 years prior... that always completely blew my mind. She lived to be 89. And she was ferociously liberal.

Have I told that story before? Pretty sure I have now that I think about it.
Worth repeating I guess.

Ironically I made this thread before I saw the current "WRUTRN" discussion.

It really is crazy how recently in history slavery was still a thing...
I used to be totally against the idea of paying reparations to black folks now, but in the last few years of the curtains being pulled back on systemic racism... It doesn't seem so far-fetched anymore

^ I agree. I've had the same thoughts on it.

Juneteenth is Freedom Day! I didn’t know much about it until my dear friend who is African American explained it to me and also how he and his family had always celebrated the day as Freedom Day and always had great picnics and barbecues and feasts to celebrate freedom with friends and family.
Two years ago me and my dad went to a barber shop for Father’s Day and it fell on Juneteenth and I wished a Blackman a happy holiday and he said “no that’s your holiday! Juneteenth is a white holiday!” and he was angered I wished him a happy holiday. I felt bad and confused and embarrassed but I feel all people can celebrate today as Freedom Day without offending anyone but if my celebration of freedom offends you then please go fuckoff. Happy Juneteenth!

Interesting. I haven't said anything to a coworker who is black because I'm not sure if it's something I should do or not...

And that it's ok for white people to celebrate it too because it's our shared history

"Lee–Jackson Day was a state holiday in the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia, commemorating Confederate commanders, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Its observation was eliminated in 2020, replaced by Election Day as a state holiday."
Observed with MLK Day creating a four day weekend.
