Frodo, I have a few carving questions for you. 1- I am a newb, so I am using a stencil to carve a pretty simple cut-out design. Is a nice, sharp paring knife my best carving tool? Or something else? 2- I have heard to keep a spray bottle of water/bleach solution handy to keep the pumpkin wet (and later keep it fresh). Does this make carving easier or is that something people do for more complex carvings? Got any other useful pointers? Your pumpkins look so damn cool.

You could use a pairing knife. If you can get a small pumpkin master set like this, just for the saw, it will work better than a pairing knife. The PM saws will break though, so slow and steady wins the race. I use xacto saws, which are a little more sturdy, and replaceable, but are difficult to find at craft stores. To clean it out and thin the front wall, I use one of these which you can easily find at a craft store. It's for carving clay, and is soooo much better than using a spoon or the plastic one from the PM set. As far as bleach, or Lysol, I've heard it works. Mine are so thin that they really aren't going to help me. I just carve right before Halloween since they have a shelf life of a couple days. Hope this helps.

I'm all done.. 50 years of the Grateful Dead. Unbelievable. I'm Uncle Sam, that's who I am. My costume for tonight. With apologies to Al, my party theme, Grateful Dia De Los Muertos. Close up of the sugar skull, I'll post a pic of the display in a bit, along with me all dolled up. Happy Hallowwen folks.
