i mean tough to have too much sympathy here. she brought drugs into a country with tough drug laws. we have people locked up in the US longer than that, for weed. but for some reason we need to fight for her freedom? why? because she's an american that got detained in a foreign country? not sure about that one... www.axios.com/2022/08/04/russia-brittney-griner-convicted |

i will say its absurd to lock anyone up more than say like 5 years for weed, even if they were mass distributing. its just weed, get over it oligarchs and rich old white dudes.
but this sentence is obviously just to gain more leverage over the US in this whole ordeal.

Was reading that there have been 2 other semi recent weed related trials of Americans
One dude from I believe PA got 14 years! For some weed
Before that another girl had 19-20 grams of weed and got 4 months, with 2 months already being served bases on her detention
This lady is one just that 2 black and three a high profile American
Russia was just lickin their chops overthis one

Seems to me to set a bad precedent to do a prisoner swap where the US is getting back someone who was careless enough to enter Russia with drugs and giving back a so-called 'butcher of death,' or whatever that guy's been found guilty of.
Kind of makes things more dangerous for Americans abroad if other countries figure they can just arrest an American on relatively small charges and get back some of their people found guilty of a lot worse crimes. I'm not worried myself, but I might be if I lived in a more autocratic country with not so great relations with the US.

Have none of these people ever watched locked up abroad? You want to be outraged? Look around, this isn't the only American in a foreign jail for drugs by a long shot. She probably got a shorter sentence in Russia than she would have in South Carolina or Idaho.

i'm confused why the administration and people in the media keep saying she was "wrongfully detained". you mean because she's an american locked up abroad? could have been a completely rando person and no one would even care about this story. or is it the fact that she got locked up for a miniscule amount of weed? if its the latter, lets change the weed laws in this nation starting today.
because besides that i don't see their angle on how she was "wrongfully detained". i mean by russian law, as shitty as it may be, she was legally detained.

I would've thought a well paid professional athlete playing for a Russian team (presumably looking to keep their star player) during the WNBA off-season would have the opportunity to make a payment to the right people to make this go away, but I wouldn't be surprised if Putin himself put the kibosh on anything other than a guilty verdict with jail time as sort of a 'fuck you' for supporting Ukraine.
