I had a dream last night that the neck on my favorite guitar got melted and destroyed. I was sad.

I got to spend some time with my Champ amp today so I rolled some preamp tubes to see how they sounded in the amp and to test the random vintage tubes in my stock. My baseline tube is a current production Tung Sol 12AX7. A great tube, brighter and more aggressive than JJs in my opinion, and the stock tube of choice for many boutique amp builders such as Tone King. I cycled through a couple GE 12AX7, they sounded good, and then I popped in the Telefunken. I have but one of these tubes because they command stupid prices, but now I see why. I would have bet that I wouldn't notice the difference compared to a new production Tung Sol but I was wrong. It sounds great. It was balanced and articulate. I tried out some RCA tubes - a 12AX7 and a 7025 (low noise 12AX7) and a Baldwin labeled RCA tube that sounded the same. Great but not as awesome as the Telefunken. Wild. I didnt even bother trying the Sylvanias. My tip for getting good vintage tubes is to find the manufacturer branded tubes like Silvertone or Baldwin because they are just relabeled RCAs most of the time but for 1/2 the price. Another day I'm gonna swap the power tube and see if there is a noticable difference, and then the rectifier tube. I'm splitting hairs here but it helps me prune down the tube stash so I know what I should keep or get rid of. I think I'm going to sell my hot rod 40w since I'm so tickled about the kit I made. But then I'll probably buy the Fender DeVille from the amp repair guy later because I'm a sucker for a deal.

devills are loud I can never turn mine up past 4, so I never feel like im getting the most out of it. I just want a small one speaker I can turn up to 8 and a half.

The Champ 5F1 is 5 watts and it's still loud enough to piss people off. I'm seriously rethinking my amp philosophy. Where has this 1950s technology been all my life? I love the raw blues sounds I'm getting.

Why did Fender sell these amps with an 8" speaker? I'm pretty sure it was part of their marketing strategy which had multiple amp price points to cover any budget. The 4 watt Champ, the 6w Princeton, 10w Harvard, 12w Vibrolux, 15w Deluxe, 18w Tremolux, 30w Pro and Super, 45w Bassman, and insane 80w Twin. With the right speaker the 5 watts become formidable though. I played through a 15" and a 12" speaker both at the same time today and it was loud enough for a pro stage. Some of the technology has obviously improved over the last 70 years with components and speakers but I am honestly astonished at what I'm getting out of a single set of tubes.

I've been plotting this project for a while so while it was coming together I nabbed a random assortment of the vintage Telefunken 12AX7, a Westinghouse 6V6GT, and a JAN Philips 5Y3WGTA rectifier.
