I'm crazy because I believe that we do not need police that if we eliminate poverty and change arbitrary laws and end the drug war that we would not need an armed gang roaming the land. Ok, I'm crazy.

They are not protecting you right now. In fact if someone came to your door and kicked it in and raped you the best they could do is try and find the attacker, and if you call them they could just show up and shoot you which has happened. So go on believing that they are doing something for you.
One thing is for sure the first thing we have to do in order to "revamp" the police force is end the drug war. You can't deny that.

There's more where that came from too.. And honk has good points treetop even if you refuse to listen.. Roll back the police 1st, give the community back to the community and watch things improve...
Laws are only as powerful as the people that enforce them.. Take the guns out of officers hands and all the sudden watch the powerful cop lobby you'd have saying stop the drug war end this economic injustice... etc
