The musicianship is good, some of the songs are catchy, him talking over the music is whack, him being super weird just to be super weird is whack.

FratZappa (and most of his 80's output) is perhaps the least intersting of his phases Good guitar work and overall musicianship, but you gotta put up with juevenile lyrics and often pedestrian songwriting. I'll take tMOI and his early 70's jazz based instrumental stuff and/or bands with George Duke (and Jean Luc Ponty) over that any day. I find some (not all) of his orchestral stuff to be interesting. The Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra stuff was pretty good.
One of my favorites, but like other bands I like a lot, I only really get into certain stages of their careers and the rest either bores or annoys me. tGD fit into this category for me as well. Can only listen to a small part of the overall output.

I have never been able to really immerse myself in his music. I like some of it, but there is a fair amount where I just kind of get bored or annoyed by. Like BB said, he put together crazy tight bands but it doesn't always fit my ear.

Certain areas of the 80s, early or late and or course the 90s. Love me some early 90s.

My Dead listening is heavily concentrated between 68-75. I'll drift out from there in both directions back a year or forward to 77. Every now and then I'll go forward one more year. Never really voluntarily listen to anything past the Keith years anymore, even for nostalgia purposes for shows I went to. Sometimes I kind of feel left out, or that I'm just not getting what everyone else seems to with the 80's and (to a lesser extent the 90's).
I do like how over the years they changed up the arrangements on some of their material, even if I didn't always like the new arrangements - TLEO, FOTD, probably a few others.

I like what the organ brought but preferred Keith and the piano overall. Brent also sung too many mediocre songs.

The Grateful Dead are the most unprofessional band to ever be successful. Zappa is the opposite.

Pretty much every band from the 60's that survived into the 80's was plagued with mediocre songs during the decade. I'd also argue they were having to compete to stay modern and at that time modern was new wave influenced songwriting being played on cold sounding digital instruments that were in their early stages and hadn't quite been perfected or tastefully worked into their playing. But that's just a personal opinion, ya understand.

So much Dead is just so sloppy. It's those gems in between that keep me listening.

I like what the organ brought but preferred Keith and the piano overall. Brent also sung too many mediocre songs. I'm really just partial to music played on accoustic, or at least analog, equipment. I like tube amps over solid-state. I tend to like music from the 80's that was made by bands that got their start in the decade, or the latter part of the 70's. Talking Heads is a perfect example. There are exceptions. But I also like simple pleasures, like butter in my ass, lollipops in my mouth. That's just me. That's just something that I enjoy.

I'm probably also influenced by only seeing the Dead with Brent or worse on the keys. At the same time Brent was over singing half of Built to Last, Jerry was screwing around with the MIDI and was totally hit or miss.

At least The Dead never went full "We Built This City" and "Valley Girl."
That's some embarrassing shit right there.
