This is my current fave boatbuilding channel. This guy is building a small boat he designed with another guy and looking to sail it around the world this year.

The world circuit extreme sail racing has to be one of the world's most expensive sports.
I have a friend that is a hydraulic specialist for these boats. He travels the world doing events and installations on these boats and yachts.
He's independent and told me he has an hourly rate, but wouldn't tell me what it is. He just laughed. On top of travel expenses of course.
He does VERY well.

The sponsors probably have the money. The guys who sail the boats probably aren't getting paid much unless they win.
