Which is what? Did he dress up like a pirate on stage or something? He loved sailing, flying, the ocean, the stories of the ocean and those that sailed it. I think my brain is not intelligent enough to pick up on what you guys are putting down. 🤪 I didn't put it down. That's how I understand it. I'm pretty sure that he joked about it in interviews. I dig his music. I think this song sums it up. Love it.

Banana Republics is one of my favorites. Fun fact. It's written by Steve Goodman. I love that song. I've met a bunch of people who fit the subjects he's singing about. Shame Steve Goodman died so young.

I am not exactly sure how Buffett became a “caricature” of himself. From his autobiographies I’ve read and whatnot, he seems like a guy that lived the life he wanted to live and used the wealth he acquired to even further pursue the things he loved to do, which it feels like, and I might be crazy, but that’s what tons of people would love to see their life mapping out like. Just my opinion of course, but I am missing the “caricature” part of his life. I agree with what you said. I just meant caricature in the same way certain actors reach a point in their career where they're not really playing characters anymore, they're playing themselves, or what their public persona is. No one hires them to stretch - even if they can. Even though Jack Nicholson can play all sorts of character types he got to a point where he was just showing up and playing "Jack" on screen. And he's an actor with range compared to a lot of the one-note action stars who always seem to play the same character in every movie. Similar with certain musicians. I read an interview where Springsteen said that when he goes onstage he's giving the audience "Springsteen" because that's what they expect, even if it's not completely him or he's not always in the mood to deliver that. Not that he's faking anything or lacks artistic range, but it's a stage persona built on a formula. When you create a cult, you have to service your followers. Buffet had the good fortune to be able to create an empire based on Jimmy Buffet the drunken beach bum who sails the Caribbean and flies sea planes. I'm not suggesting he faked anything, but in a way he boxed himself into a Billion $ corner by having to be 'that guy' all the time. It's great at paying the bills and buying whatever you want, but it kind of limits what you can do artistically since if you don't deliver what the audience you created wants they'll no longer have reason to be fans. Artistically he became the character he created as much as Jack Nicholson created "Jack." And if you're not careful that can bite you in the ass. Kind of like what happened to DeNiro when he started getting shit and bad reviews for no longer (for the most part) playing roles and just showing up and playing "DeNiro." I've got all of Buffet's albums in my library up until he got rid of his mustache in the mid-80's. I'll take any Don Gant produced album from before he got massively big right up to his apex (Changes in Latitudes..... first post-Gant) album over anything that followed because for the most part those albums from 'Son of Son...' on were him just trying to recapture past successes using the same old formula. Not to say he didn't occasionally hit the mark after becoming huge, but there was a lot of filler after those early albums. I'm not blaming or even criticizing him, just pointing out an observation. Even without the empire he created he lived a pretty interesting life. This excerpt from a review of SOASOAS kind of sums up what I was trying to get across: A year later, he's back with his seventh album, Son of a Son of a Sailor, but things have changed. Now, Buffett has a high-profile manager in Irving Azoff (who is dressed like Napoleon in the high-fashion photo spread across the gatefold of the LP), and as his smiling, well-upholstered image on the cover shows, he's not a beach bum anymore; now he looks like the happy owner of a yacht. Accordingly, he isn't writing songs like "Margaritaville" anymore, either. The closest approximation to that is "Cheeseburger in Paradise," which might as well be a commercial jingle for a fast-food chain. The locus of the songs still tends to be in the Caribbean, the characters still lowlifes, but the personal touch is missing. Buffett is writing fiction now, and the edge is off. Having achieved the perfect expression of his world-view the last time around, and profited handsomely as a result, he is now no longer funny in a self-deprecating way that makes his songs touching. He was never one to take himself too seriously, but now he's veering toward self-parody.

^^ I get what you're saying, buffet could have never done a "bluegrass" "prog rock" "funk" etc album and not have it hurt the "brand"
I also appreciate the quote you posted, it helps me understand as someone in their mid 40 what I initially liked about buffet and grew to not like so much.
at the end of the day I agree with what hokie posted earlier.
rip Jimmy and thanks for making millions of people smile.

I like that pencil thin mustache song and the sweet potato fries at his cheeseburger restaurant were quite good from what I remember.

'Fun Songs to Get Shitfaced To' would be a fine name for a Buffet anthology.

When I saw Phish at NOJF 96, Jimmy was the MC of the stage they played on. Fun crowd and day. Sadly, I never attended a Buffett concert.

Distant cousin is fair. I think most parrot heads were one weekend a year parrot heads who would get absolutely wrecked because they were so out of practice.
