I keep telling my son,โ people my age think being late means you donโt care enough.โ Fair. But people out age think 2 weeks.notice is a requirement...nah it's just been a courtesy, push comes to shove (at least in the corporate side of things) they'd let people go in 2 hours. Let alone 2 weeks I always abided by, consistently late = on time I'll stay late, but if I show up at 8:03 ready to go every day, welp then my shift starts at 8:03 These are newly adopted philosophies as I've always given 2 weeks and used to be beyond punctual Now I'd rather know the weather than the time..work will get done one way or another I also really disagree with this because one dude at my job abuses this. He comes in every day at 11AM, he has MS and chooses to park further away from work than necessary just to save a little bit of money (He's one of the highest paid employees in my office too). He effectively misses a week of work a month and is a giant POS about it. 9AM means 9AM

I hate waiting for late people. Especially people who are always late. I view it as them disregarding my time. Just assuming I have extra time to waste waiting for whatever is a jerk move. I am totally understanding that people are not on time for all sorts of reasons. This mini rant is only directed towards the people who are always late. Set a fucking alarm.

Depends on what kind of work you're doing. If you are a part of a team that needs you to be there to get the job done, or you are responsible to customers when the office hours start, or any other number of scenarios it's not a wash. Everyone I work with thinks this doesn't matter either, but someone has to be here to open the building on time and staff the phones on time, etc...

Figure out how to get places when you tell people you are going to be there. Time is not an unlimited resource.

The dude at my work will also start work at an insanely late time, stay "late" working on it and then not show up until 11AM the next day so somebody else will have to basically reprocess the whole thing to actually finish the work. It looks like it's a "wash" but it's really somebody disregarding everyone else's efforts to get to work on time and do the work.

I've never been late to anything in my life.

I work 6a-2p, partly to be able to deal with contractors before my building is full of people and partly because I get to miss the worst of the awful traffic in this area. Because of this, I have been the first person to work for well over 20 years. There is nobody to check when I arrived, there's no time clock and we don't open to the public until 8. Despite this, I think I can only recall two times that I was here later than 6 am and both were traffic related and beyond my control. I guess it's kind of my own version of OCD.

If you're coming over to hang and smoke a joint I don't care if you're late. If you're driving me to the airport I do. If I got a busy day and decide I couldn't hang around waiting for your late ass to do you that favor you asked that's on you.
What people do in this culture is to say "en punto" if you want them to know that they need to show up at that exact time. If someone invites you to a party at their house at 9 o'clock and that's when you show up it's considered rude, but if your dentist says your appointment is at 9 en punto, they mean at 9. I like the whole tranquilo outlook on time but when it's important you let someone know.
I never cared what co-workers did as long as it didn't affect me or my paycheck. If someone is chronically late that's a management issue. If their boss/employer doesn't know/care than why should anyone else? Pretty much everyone does something at work against the rules. Showing up late/leaving early, taking long lunches, using office supplies for personal use, making personal calls, watching YouTube and/or time spent on internet forums instead of working for the company, etc.
It's like being pissed at someone for driving by you on the highway over the speed limit when it has no effect on you getting to your destination. Maybe the cops will deal with them. Maybe they know the cops don't care. Maybe they're willing to take the risk. Maybe the cop is his father in law. Seeing what someone else is getting away with may be an incentive to consider doing the same. From childhood on we're the type of animal who likes to push limits. Live and let live.
