Just cleaned out the supply lines and aerators, checked the pressure tank. I could have done it but it would have taken me a half day of googling shit and going to home depot to get the special delta faucet key. I had checked a couple of them but there were two more in my kitchen faucet I didn't know about. Also gave me some good advice on a couple things. I felt a little Harry homeowner but happy to have everything working again.

Every now and then on some expat focused online forum there's some guy (it's always a guy) who's a skilled tradesman or computer software engineer coding designer whatever in the states or Europe who's tired of the rat race, the stress, the high cost of living, etc., decides he wants out, and figures he'll go do what he's doing now in a third world/developing country and asks the expat community on the forum for some suggestions on where, how, or if they're smart, whether it's even feasible.
Pretty soon they get responses letting them know that no matter what they know or do where they are now, no matter how much they make, they're going to have to lower their expectations because computer programmers and skilled tradesman (and a whole bunch of other professions) aren't all that well paid (and in many cases aren't all that skilled, which doesn't matter because expectations are lower) and no one is going to pay them anywhere near what they think they're worth when there's a million other guys who'll do the job for a fraction of what they think they can charge, even if they are more skilled than the locals.
It works almost exactly opposite of what they're hoping. Plumbers, electricians, etc. in developing countries would love to work in a country where they get paid $130 for a service call for pretty much just showing up and then getting paid bank for any and everything else they do. Until they assimilate and realize they won't live like a king once they start needing to get their car or teeth fixed or wind up in hospital without any insurance.

I feel like the thing to do is take the trade skills and learn how to do it on boats. Live in the islands and work on rich people's yachts. They leave them all over the place to get serviced in the offseason. I guess the downside would be you might have to be there during hurricane season.

I mean obviously I'm broke and can't really plan on anything but Im thinking maybe get a boat when Lil goes to college and live on it in the bay. Maybe work at a boat yard doing bottom paint, varnish work and fiberglass repair. Get as much experience as I can for a few years and then take it to the Bahamas for a couple months and see how it goes. I see nice boats that don't need much work for less than 10k all the time. You can find boats that need a lot of work for free.

I've come across people who do things similar to that. Skilled tradespeople to SCUBA bums who scrape barnacles off of hulls by day and try to pick up local girls or tourists in the bars at night. Years ago I had a surfing friend who worked as an over-qualified paper pusher at a huge defense industry company. He got tired of being a depressed weekend warrior, went back to school to get a nursing degree, and started working on off-shore oil rig platforms for 3-6 month stretches where they paid him beyond good money and covered all of his expenses while working. Between gigs he spent his time (and accumulated earnings) chasing waves all over the world.
Work on their boats, work on their island getaway homes, carve out your own version of Magnum P.I.

Hurricanes arenβt that bad. You have days to prepare. it would suck if you were living on a boat and your boat wound up in a pile of other boats.
