My thought has always been that the losses from theft are inevitably passed on to the consumer base at large. So, you're basically stealing from everyone. Thinking about now, I'm not sure I really give a shit anymore or how much difference it even makes. I won't do it, but whatever.

I hope venk is ok, mentally, as well but I've enjoyed the silence the last few weeks. The fact is he has been a pric to almost everyone on this board. He has taken constant personal shots at most of us over the years and then plays the victim when he's, himself, ganged up on. I can only feel so much remorse for someone who has shown no remorse to anyone else on this message board time and time again. I know what it's like to hate the world and take it out on random people on the internet, I know what it's like to be a keyboard warrior, time and time again. Eventually, you learn to grow up and get a literal life, and leave that petty internet shit behind, which is what I hope for him, but I'm ok with him not being around these parts spewing his headier than thou opinion and then attacking everyone that doesn't agree with it. STFU gerg eventually, we learn to grow lol

I'm in the camp of, not properly trained to scan groceries, sometimes things may get missed , legitimately and accidentally
Not often , but sometimes
Im notorious for forgetting about the shit under the cart
Not on purpose, just always forget about that heavy crap

My brother in-law, the dental surgeon, has a relatively well off patient who was planning on finishing up her months long treatment before taking a months long trip to Europe. His dental office is inside the same building as the largest (only true) supermarket in the valley. His patient who was dropping big $ on her mouth and big $ to spend a few months travelling in Europe got caught shoplifting at the supermarket. Sounds like she doesn't need to steal, maybe she just has a compulsion to do so. The supermarket, after showing her video catching her in the act, dropped the ban hammer. Not just on the supermarket section of the building, but the entire building, which means she can't get to her dentist appointments. They're trying to figure out a work around where my brother in-law would rent another dentist's space for her appointments where I'm assuming she'd have to pay the extra rental/time costs.

I don't care what others do and don't judge, but I haven't outright stolen anything since I was a kid other than drunkenly taking a bottle of wine when at my 27'th birthday party held in the back room of a restaurant - it's not worth getting caught.
I will admit to having given myself self-applied store discounts when finances were tight - though not at small, locally owned markets, just the big chains. When you write the bin # or print out a label I'd use the # for the coffee on sale instead of the coffee in the bag. Or print out a sticker for conventional fruit instead of organic. I recently read about some guy (who described it as a "hack") who would get his steaks from the butcher section and then use a sticker for something much cheaper like flour when he went through self checkout. I've never seen self checkout in S. America. Probably because labor is cheap and they know that self checkout would be super abused - poverty makes people take measures they might not take if they weren't in poverty.
Self checkout seems like such an obvious invitation for theft. You gotta figure the bean counters figured the savings on labor costs outweigh any losses due to self checkout. If they're going to put profits over people/employees, I don't have issues if people use that same system to their advantage since the big corporate stores are still coming out ahead by cutting their labor costs. It's all just business.
