When I was a kid my dad would take me to Mets games back when they absolutely sucked. So he'd score tickets for when they were playing against a good team so we'd get to see the best players of the day. Got to see Charlie Hustle and the Big Red Machine a few times and was lucky enough to see him do his trademark head-first Superman like flying dive into base. Worst haircut in baseball, great player, put him in the Hall.

Not old enough to see his 44 game hit streak but remember him chasing down Ty Cobb for the hits record. I remember him as a Phillies first baseman, but he’ll always be a Reds 3B/OF.

My mom had some hot sports options on Pete Rose, was basically “fuck that guy”.
If asked a week ago, I probably would have said maybe he should be in the hall, but with his death I read some of the obits and
He was an original Trumper…. Deny, deny, deny, rewrite history. Well that “bet” didn’t payoff and after further review…..
Fuck that guy.

He was a total asshole who was a really great baseball player. I have no issue separating the two from each other.

I don't know enough about him as a person to make a judgement, but it always sounded like he wasn't the greatest guy. I dont' condone him being a degenerate gambler, but at the same time, he was one of the greatest hitters in the game. Not sure how you can allow players who juiced to be inducted into the Hall of Fame but not Pete.
The one thing I hate about the hall of fame in any sport is often times great players will be glanced over until the die, and then they're put in. I know Pete is a slightly different circumstance but that's exactly what happened to Ron Santo, and the guy deserved to be in while he was still living!

"It sounds like in Japan, they're trying to make me the Hit Queen," Rose told USA Today Sports. "I'm not trying to take anything away from Ichiro -- he's had a Hall of Fame career -- but the next thing you know, they'll be counting his high school hits."
Lol, dude was definitely a degenerate and a great ball player. I think that's the case for a lot of these older greats. I also think the Hall's stance on steroids is pretty clear. Ortiz is the one *maybe* I can think of...

There are no suspected juicers in the hall outside of Ortiz. Everyone from that era is going to have questions about them though. I think they should all be in the HOF. Put whatever you need to on the plaque, but it's insane that Barry Bonds isn't in the HOF, just like Pete and Shoeless Joe.

its always how i've felt as well hokie. put an asterisk if so be it, but the baseball writers are purposely leaving out some of the best players to ever do it simply because of allegations. obviously the case for Rose is different, but he still deserves to be in. maybe create a separate room for the steroid era guys "suspected cheaters of the game but too good to ignore".

If you are interested, there is a fantastic documentary on Pete on HBO. It came out this year.
He was one of the hardest working, headstrong, determined people to have success in any endeavor.
He was also a gambler, who knew what he was doing was wrong.
He was also a terrific liar, and still was by the end of his life. But, the one truth he told was that he knew they would never put him in the hall of fame while he was alive. He thought they would put him in after he died. I think he’s right about that, and I think he should be let in, regardless of what crimes he committed.
He was also a HUGE asshole, and could be very funny.
True story:
My best friend (Neil) is his biggest fan.
Pete came to the Phillies when we were 5 years old and helped win the first World Series in franchise history. Even though he will always be remembered as a Red, he is still very beloved in Philly.
Neil is a baseball nut. I really only became a fan because of him. I grew up rooting for the Phillies, but he’s the one that took me to almost every game I have been to, and I have been to probably 100 games in my life.
Neil is also one of those dudes that have lined up, time after time, to have Pete sign shit and get a very forced “thank you.” He has every single item you can have signed. Like everything.
In college, his girlfriend bought him a Reds Jersey for his birthday and took him to Atlantic City to have it signed. She was beautiful (still is) and Neil was in full wook mode. Super long hair and a big bushy beard. He was also pushing 280lbs. They wait in line and finally get to Pete, just expecting the signature and a gruff acknowledgement.
Pete looks at her, and then looks at Neil, and then looks back at her and says “What? Were you drunk when you met him?” and let out a huge laugh with a huge smile. The two of them walked away speechless.
Anyway, TLDR. RIP Hit King. PEEEEEEEEEETEEEEE
