Wrong. When they arrived in america in the late 1800s they were called Coney island sammies or frankfurter sandwiches
Also the USDA specifically mentions them in their official regulatory definitions for sandwich inspections

However, the national hot dog and sausage council (aka big hot dog) has said that their official policy is to declare that they are "hot dog formerly known as sandwich." Times are a changing so I say we squash this beef into our mouths and break bread with some delicious wieners. Okay that last part sounded better in my head.
