I had one of those and they are cool. The only thing is you need a 1/8" TS mono cable. If you use a TRS stereo cable it loads the signal and doesn't give you full output volume

You could also get a beat making app for your phone to save some money. The volca is good value for the money but I think you could find better options for just a backing track. Korg has a distinct "electro" sound to their drums which is good if your into that sound but it won't give you the sort of rock drum sound I mostly associate with guitar sounds. Also the volca doesn't have any swing to the grooves unless you sequence it externally, which ultimately might make your guitar playing tighter. A simple .wav player that loops could also work for your backing tracks. There are literally millions of drum loops available to download for free if you choose that option.

I know it isn't ideal for backing track, but the demos looked fun. I like the step mode. I've never played with anything like this either and this one seems like a good intro level device.

I also like the analog functionality and the fact that I can experiment with running into some effects pedals like phaser and delay.

I recently bought my boy a used drumset. Gretch birch catalina. Practically brand new. Hopefully he actually uses it.

I recently bought my boy a used drumset. Gretch birch catalina. Practically brand new. Hopefully he actually uses it. you need a drum dial! It's a pressure meter for tuning. Imagine trying to play your guitar and it's always out of tune. You feel defeated before you even get going. Drums need tuning too.
