I give props for the troops, I sure as hell wouldn't die for this country
Now that being said, I dont think a whole platoon guarding poppy fields in Afghanistan or oil drills in Kuwait to protect the financial interests of a few global entities re keeping us free or giving us freedom
I'm not ever worried about one of those countries blowing up the good ol U S of A

Pretty much anything having to do with "the troops" is a wedge issue. No one actually gives a fuck about them. They just like flying flags and singing songs and feeling righteous. It looks like pretty much everything is a wedge issue, or can easily be made into one. Judging by comment sections on websites it seems like there's a lot of people who are into 'owning the libs,' or 'owning the cons.' Politicians who want to get re-elected pick up on that whole thing and give them what they want.

60 votes are required to pass this legislation. It's fucking absurd. You can pass anything with a simple majority in a budget reconciliation bill, and it cannot be stalled in the Senate by filibuster, and it does not need the President's signature. That is how to do it. It's legal and available. Will they? Reconciliation is a legislative process of the United States Congress that expedites the passage of certain budgetary legislation in the United States Senate. ... Reconciliation bills can be passed on spending, revenue, and the federal debt limit, and the Senate can pass one bill per year affecting each subject.

I consider myself a moderate liberal. Left of Joe, little to the right of Bernie. But I'm sure the next thing I'm gonna say is going to make me sound like an ignorant caveman but... why "we" insist on burning up so much political capital over the "transgender in the military" thing is beyond my comprehension. How many people are we talking about here? A couple hundred maybe? Yes they should be able to serve and be protected of course but first thing out of the gate we need to make a big "splash" over this particular issue? Really? As an Army vet I can assure you this it's not well received... especially considering the poster person for this is Chelsea Manning, who is viewed as a traitor... obviously "traitors" come in all shapes and sizes but she does not benefit their cause. It really galvanizes the hell out the "other side" too. Let's go to war over something that benefits the most people and take on these kind of issues down the road... I heard as many as 10,000 troops affected by this. Democrats either believe in all men created equal and LGBTQ rights or they donβt. Donβt like it Republicans? Fuck you. They shit all over us and the Country for 4 years, letβs stop asking for permission and worrying how people feel about it. Burn it all down and get your shit passed. Thatβs how the game is now.

I hear you and I agree with you (expect for the 10,000. There's no way.)
Obviously my opinion is shaped by my experience. The military sucks. It sucks for whites, blacks, latinos, men, women, straight, gay... and I wasn't in any wars! And it ain't full of "heroes" doing heroic shit I assure you. There's a whole lot of scumbags, criminals, degenerates, psychos and fucking losers in all branches. Why any member of the trans community would VOLUNTEER to be a part of it is beyond me.

They were talking about it on npr on the way home and it sounded like it's affected a lot more people than a few hundred. There's not good way to track it though because they don't ask if you're leaving the military because you're trans. It's not like this out in the open.

Think about it. If you were a girl who self identified as a man but weren't willing to come out and transition or whatever publicly, what better place for you than the military? It's a hyper masculine environment where everyone dresses the same regardless of gender. Mostly. Probably all kinds of trannie males up in the women's barracks.

Dude I used to work with told me his experience about being in the military
Said he hated it, so he concocted a way to get out. Told one of his commanding officers he was gay(and he wasnt) ()now this is late 90s hardcore dont ask dont tell ers I suppose, and the officer told him hell have to set to go talk to some person who handles these things for an ultimate decision
He says he walks into the office of where he has to go, and there sits , this super sexy smokeshow black lady that he just couldnt believe was who he had to talk with
Gives the ole riggamarole of being around all these dudes is making it hard for him to control his urges (I believe he even said he was rockin wood because of her sexiness, this may have been added for dramatic effect)
After an hour or so in there with her, the ultimately decide to let him go.
He was glad he did, however regretted not asking her for her number on the way out

A lot of the women were bi or gay. And there were definitely some gay dudes. But even in the late 80's it was pretty much don't ask, don't tell. Everybody knew "what was what" and nobody made a big deal of it as far as I knew. I imagine once you achieved higher ranks and were "bucking for promotion" it would become a problem.
One of the "explanations" we were given for not having women (or any significant other I guess) in direct combat was that a soldier would be more inclined to save a loved one than to obey an order. He or she would be more be more likely to jeopardize the mission and/or their fellow soldiers on behalf of someone they were romantically involved with.
"Sorry - your girl/guy's a goner. Nothing we can do."
"Fuck you mf'er! I'm going to get her/him!"

What's the over/under on total pages for this thread during Biden's presidency?
I'm gonna set the line at 262.5 to start, and I think I'm leaning under. Should be a defensive battle compared to the president shithead thread...

I think my reaction was based mostly on the "burning of political capital". There is no such thing anymore. Do you think Biden ran this past McConnell? We didn't pass this on the agreement that we would do something for them. Mitch McConnell has made political capital non-existent. His game is fuck you because I can, even if it helps my own constituents. If the last 4 years didn't convince D's that this is now how the game works I don't know what will. Sadly we have Sinema and Manchin already saying no the the filibuster override and Mitch is going to waste the bulk of the 2 years we actually have control of both chambers.
