Either way, no matter who wins, it sounds like we're gonna wind up with a late in his second term version of Reagan where he functioned more as a figurehead while others handled the day to day stuff behind the scenes.
Since I'm not going to have the opportunity to choose someone who I find at least somewhat inspiring, just tell me which old man with the old man symptoms is more benign, with his heart in somewhat the right place, has more policies I'm likely to get behind or somewhat align with, and perhaps most importantly will staff his administration with like minded people who'll actually do the work, and which old man with the old man symptoms is a malignant asshole who has no heart, policies I'll despise, and most importantly will staff his administration with like minded asshole minions who'll do their master's bidding.

He's still the most progressive President we've ever had, including Obama. There are currently no better alternatives that are running or that have even a remote chance of winning (MW, RFKJR). Biden winning would be miles better than a young George Bush or Donald Trump or Dementia ridden Reagan, and none of those assholes ended the Country. This isn't the end times; we aren't about to be raptured and our Government has much bigger problems than the Presidency. Congress is a total disaster and I see no solution to that, certainly not in Trump's lifetime but likely much longer than that. It would be better if he stopped doing off the cuff press conferences, but he isn't up there telling people to eat horse paste or drink Clorox.

I'm more concerned with health of the environment, climate change, and how it's going to effect the planet and everyone living or yet to be born who will have to deal with all of it. I have no hope that any solution will come through politicians because at best all they seem to do is acknowledge the problem, pass some legislation that doesn't get enforced and instead gets vital deadlines delayed - they're kicking the can down the road for our kids and grandkids and their kids to solve with the thought that by then it will still be solvable in spite of what science is currently saying. Or maybe they figure since they won't be around - fuck it, let's keep making money no matter the costs. |

This is the preferred approach. What works for me is reminding myself that the world always seems to be in some state of fucked and yet here we still are. What worries me more about now is that the threats are less existential (Cold War bringing about nuclear destruction, etc.) and more concretely measurable things such as the effects of climate change. I also remind myself that as an old I probably won't be around for the worst of the shit and that I've lived a pretty good life so far - at least I'm enjoying the ride. |
