not saying they shouldn't be held accountable but it must be tough.

If it's tough they shouldn't take the job in the first place. That's why I never worked in a meat packing plant, as a migrant farm worker, as a crab fisherman in the seas off Alaska, a lion tamer, as a bomb diffuser, etc.. If you can't handle the pressure without flipping out on the people you're supposed to be serving and protecting find another line of work, cause nobody's forcing anyone to be a cop.
Saw something on the news earlier about how the medical examiners conspire with the cops to make them look innocent. They even had a given name for the syndrome. Guy died of stress, or something like that. Blame other causes, like dude was overweight, the stress on his heart from having a completely normal interaction with the cops is what killed him, not the knee pressed down on his neck. Fuck those guys too.
Like a lot of us, I've been fucked with by the police, but not because I'm white. I'm pretty sure being white is what has kept my interactions to a minimum and kept them from physically fucking me up - mostly just harrassment.
Fuck them. Why anyone would want that job is beyond me. As someone mentioned earlier, if you want to serve the community there are far better ways than strapping on a gun, enforcing laws, often discriminatorily, and even if you're 'one of the good ones,' at a minimum covering up or keeping silent for all of the bad ones. There ain't many Serpicos out there.

lol...All I got to say to all y'all is you have no understanding of why a cop is ever a 'good' cop Doesn't seem that hard to understand Are they good cops because they sometimes shoot hoops with kids? What kind of comment is this? Are you kidding? I hope so.

People acting like there is no need for the job of a police force that operates AS IT SHOULD are living in some kind of dream world.
What is all of your answers? What should we do instead of having some kind of police force? All of your comments seem to indicate we shouldn't have one since apparently all of them are bad. So shut it all down then, huh. That is what all of you keep indicating with your comments.
Just because some people have gotten into policing for their own fucked up reasons does not mean everyone does. This would be my opinion, by the way, even if my son did not want to become a police officer.
I truly do not see why he DOES want to go out and protect and serve people that have nothing but contempt for the job he'd be trying to do.

I think new recruits fall victim to the culture of the police force. I'm sure most of them have sincere intentions when they go in...
There has been a para-military take over of police forces all over the country. "Out-gunned by The Gangs so let's load up and get tough. Everybody is scum."
Maybe I'm being naive but I think they were different when we were young. I don't see the kindness in their eyes the way I did when they were my coaches in the Police Athletic League.
And 20 years of war hasn't helped either.

I know of four guys from HS who went on to become police officers.
Two of them committed suicide.

It can't be as black and white as its being portrayed.
Cops are humans, none of them are perfect. There are good cops and bad cops. There are good cops that do bad things and there are bad cops that do good things.
To say all cops are bad is not fair.
I do struggle with how militarized our police have become. It's a proven fact that when given military style equipment that violent encounters with civilians will increase.
BTW did you know that you are not allowed to use tear gas during a war with another country but we regularly use it on our own citizens (Geneva protocol 1925)

Stereotyping all of the police together and saying they all act and think the same is dumb. That's what people from Russia do.

I used to hate all cops. I still have not met many I like. Or any. I just try not to hate. All I can say is that until they start doing more to weed out the bad cops. They are all suspect and wear costumes suggesting the murdering and helpful ones play for the same team.
I will not post it again. But remind people that a few years ago a 60 year old homeless man threatened some cops with a 3 inch pocket knife in a pawn store parking lot. The man never came within 20 feet of the cops. They filled him with bullets. Literally so many rounds it was impossible to count. That was in broad daylight with and audience next to a busy 4 lane road. All the cops kept their job after determined it was self defence.
After seeing that video (a mile from home) and many similar. I find it surprising more citizens are not going after the cops first. Regardless of how many actual good people become cops. There is clearly something very very wrong with a large enough percentage of them. Something needs changed!

I remember the video of the little old black man trying to run away and getting blown away by that cop in SC. Cop then dropped a gun next his body.
The only reason that guy is in jail now is because of the video. No video, he's still a cop.

the problem is the ones that do fucked up things get off, and that empowers the others. I had a friend killed by the police at a grateful dead show, and they all got suspended for two weeks and hes still dead. his name was Patrick Shanahan he was a great friend.

Damn dude, just read the tines article about it. That is crazy and awful. Similar thing happened to the troy goode fella on the way to (not at) a panic show by MS police like maybe 10 years ago now. It sucks that there is no reason for police to consider avoiding killing people, there is no real check on them.

This country is in for a very serious shitshow. Pretty plain that rioting is going to continue and police will be coming down harder to keep large parts of the some of these cities from being burned, which will then in turn make people even more mad, etc
We have the Fomenter in Chief working that angle and taking his chances with that...*Talking about sending in Military Police.
Its also apparent that he plans on just stealing the election because he's not even trying to address any of these issues in a conciliatory way....but what else is new.

Stereotyping all of the police together and saying they all act and think the same is dumb. . I agree with this completely. And I think it is wonderful you truly believe your child will be one of the good cops. I understand your frustration with this conversation. I also think it unfortunate that most people have either had a negative interaction or know someone who has. Its hard to convince a lot of people they are even safe with cops around (mostly cuz of the drug war on non violent citizens). But that is reality. In high school it was some of the biggest jock dickhead dominant assholes who went on to become cops. And my sister married one of the most well meaning but terribly confused cops I have met. He truly believes bringing the law into people's lives improves things for them. So he is a nice guy that would gladly arrest most of you and leave you struggling to get out of the system. I have no bright answers. And I do see the need for some sense or order. I just feel its far to broken in far to many ways.

It's not 'there are good cops and there are bad cops' and yeah, stereotyping all individual cops is dumb, it's that the institution itself is completely fucked up. If not the individuals, the institution itself is bad and worthy of stereotyping.
